I've never owed a vehicle with the gas tank mounted inside vehicle, can you smell gas inside these trucks?

it can also stink if the fuel sender is loose and leaking, like when the body shop paints the inside, pulls the sender and fails to tighten it down and you fill it with fuel only to have a possible bomb on your hands because you have all new weather stripping and door sills. Oh and you do not notice and leave it parked inside you business all weekend and come in monday to a very heavy fuel smell throughout the warehouse, good thing you notice before flipping on the breakers, I was even scared to open the manual roll up door thinking I could cause a spark. (not that this has ever happened or that someone would want their insurance company to find out....)

For some reason my wife gets nervous when she rides in the truck. I go around a corner and the half tank of gas slams up against one end.

Mine only stinks when I fill it up but I have a leak around the sending unit. I had replaced the filler neck hose and the grommet and it helped a lot with with the smell.

Mine used to stink. I thought it was the neck. Found out I had a bad fuel pump. That is how bad it was spraying everywhere.

leak around the sending unit
This is a real easy fix that I'd take care of for sure!

In dc's catalog: Truck Bronco 4x4 1966-1979 Fuel Tank Sending Unit to Tank Gasket C0AF-9276-A 1.00 Each

I drive a chebby van for work that is awful for pulling exhaust from outside into the cab!
Oh well, there go a few more brain cells! :D

Couple of other things...

I just settled a very small leak around the threads at the fuel pump - it was leaking enough to drain the line from the carb and cause me 3 or 4 30 second cranking session in the morning to pump up the lines again.

Also, if there are holes in the bulkead that aren't sealed up and the carb seeps at the gaskets or is rich you'll eyes will start to burn as it blows back into the cab.

Good luck!

When I had a bump as my DD I got pretty good at using the slam as a substitute for a working gas gauge.Well, okay, I got pretty good at it AFTER I walked a few times.

thats why I used to love riding in my truck as a child, all kids like the smell of gasoline, or maybe thats just a west texas thing. I ended up having mine fixed...now its just musty...and I get 4 more truck lengths worth of milage.
