What did I do wrong?

Post by motomattman »

I just got done rewiring my 68 and I only have two problems. I have no front running lights and when I step on the brake the left front running light comes on. Both work just fine with the flashers so I know its not the bulb but I can't figure out what I did wrong when everything else works perfect.

Did you use the stock wiring diagram? The running lights only work in the middle position which is one of the terminals on the light switch. Check to make sure the bulbs are good. Do you have rear brake lights? The obvious, the left front running light is getting power from the brake light switch somehow.

I used the stock wiring harness out of my 68 c.s into my 68 highboy. The rear lights wrong fine, brakes, turn and running. Just can't figure out how the brake light switch is sending power to the front and why they don't turn on but the blinkers work?

do both trucks have the dummy lights in the guage cluster or the guages? mmaybe your trun signal harness is bad in the column.

the one I took out had dummy and I wanted guages so I swapped, it was just unplug and plug pretty simple except for me.

Sounds like your problem is in the Turn Signal Switch (TSS) or wiring of... The Brake lights get there power from the Brake switch and then it runs into the TSS to go to the brake lights. The Turn Signals get there power from the Turn Flasher and runs to the TSS... so separate power sources.
Also, the bulbs for the marker and turn signals are one bulb but they have 2 elements in them and one can burn out. Also it takes separate wires for each element so if one works it doesn't mean the other will if it is not connected...
So the front marker lights could be a separate problem and as noted above the fronts will only be on when the light switch is in the park light spot, they will go out when the headlights are turned on.

This thread is long but some of the info there may be of some help http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... hp?t=25768 Let me know if you have questions :)

Did you also use the engine harness from the donor truck? Trucks with a factory ammeter had a different wiring arrangement in the engine bay, as well as under the dash. I doubt that not using it would create the specific symptoms you're describing, but it would create other problems.

For what it's worth, my headlights stopped working a couple years back. The problem turned out to be a bad floor mounted dimmer switch. Once I replaced it the problem went away.

sometimes those floor dimmer switches will get wet and rusty. and they wont work properly. they will sometimes stick down when you push them. and thus give you no lights at all. mine used to do that. i had to use the edge of my shoe to pop it back up sometimes.
