wiper delay

Post by 1971ford »

im going to bid on this, and pick it up from him too since hes only a few minutes away, just double checking that it will be a plug in with my wiring.since its says 73-79 years and Keith's delay article says just 78-79. will it be a plug-in? (i know about the mounting of the delay box and trimming the rod)

i havent done this. but the wiper page does tell about the wiring of them and all that stuff. i don't remember exactly what the page says but there is at least one wire i think that has to be wired in to your exsisting wiring.

Ryan,

I bought the set-up over a year ago.
I've read the tutorial here, (but still have not installed it)
Great addition to our bumps for sure.

ill add this to the junkyard list of stuff to look for since it seems uncommon and worth probably alot more than the junkyard would charge you.

You might not ever know a truck has the intermittent (delay) wipers in it unless you try to turn the wiper switch in the reverse direction. The delay option is in the counter-clockwise direction. The clockwise direction on the wiper switch is the same and has the normal two switch positions.

I just added this to my 1968 F100 out of a 1979 Ranger.

It is nice to be able to turn the delay feature on when there is a misty rain and it keeps you from having to constantly turn the wipers on and off to clear the windshield (especially when driving a standard tranny truck).

If I ever get around to fixing the wrecked 1969 F100 Ranger that I recently bought I will add this to it as well. It would be a nice addition to all of the other options the truck already has in it.

i checked that on a few trucks. turn the switch that is. but after a while i was taking the dash clusters out and i just followed the wires. and they were all two speed switches with no control boxes.

Don't waste the time tearing the stuff apart IF the switch doesn't have the counter-clockwise variable positioning built into it. Go to the XLT and XLT Lariat versions of the 80-86 Ford trucks and Broncos to see what the switches do. You will find the intermittent wipers in those more than you will the 73-79 trucks (78-79 only??) and you can see how the switches work anyway. I have been fooled a couple of times by a loose worn out two-speed wiper switch knob.

I will now start more actively looking for these in the trucks now. The place I go to is ver-r-r-ry fair on it's pricing of parts when I come up with a pile of stuff so as I find others I will also make them available to other members.

I put one on my '68 CS...

One of the easiest upgrades to do...
Living in great Pacific Northwest, intermittant wipers are pretty much a necessity.
Mine was a newer one (80-86) I just had to move one wire...
I think more Broncos had them than pickups...
I went to two differant wrecking yards and found 4 of them...
one was just the relay box, no switch, but it was just sitting on the seat, so I snagged it too.
Because I was getting other parts, I didn't get charged for the switches at all... well, sorta... they just gave me a good price for the lot...

I was thinking about getting one back in the summer but just lost interest for some reason. I know I really don't need it since I don't really drive it anymore. I know thought that the local Ford truck junkyard has some. I don't know, maybe I will go get one.

I came across about 4 to 5 today in 1980 to 1991 pickups today. They were the 6 wire (newer) type and not the 7 wire (older 78-79) type. The XLT and XLT Lariats seem to be where the majority of them are (were). I got 3 switches and I only felt like removing one control box. I was too involved with the other stuff I was trying (hoping) to find.

I will keep my eyes open for more and if I'm not too lazy I will get more on the next trip. I'm on vacation this week so I will probably be back there right after the New Years Day holiday.
