Reverse light

Post by greenbank »

So, dumb question (to be expected):

Reverse lamp triggered by a switch in the tranny of an automatic or via the column "neutral" switch? This is my '68 CS.

Drove truck for the first time in awhile at night tonight. Let's see...brake lights failed (bodged wiring to switch I've been meaning to get to) right headlamp failed (turns out my retaining ring is broken, the thing probably vibrated to death) and I've never had reverse lights in the time I've owned it. Figured I have a "fix the lights" day ahead, and might as well take care of the reverse lights while I'm at it...

Sounds like you have some fun ahead of you :P The Reverse Light Switch is in with (part of) the Neutral Safety Switch on the column. Should be Black-Red stripe wires.

Thanks, thunderfoot! I have trouble with the ignition cut-out in that anyway, so its due for a replacement.

A test for the reverse light portion of your neutral safety switch is SET the parking brake. Turn your key to the on OR accesory position without starting the truck. Have someone stand behind the truck for you OR set a mirror in a position you can see the taillights in behind the truck OR use a window OR reflection in the side of another vehicle to look at the taillights as you move the gear shift selector up and down through the gear positions. If the neutral safety switch is slightly off in it's adjustment you should see the reverse lights come on or blink as you move past the reverse position of the switch.
Too many projects, too little time, but.. lovin' it!
