Cool Steering Wheel
Hello to all. It's been a while since I have checked in. I have been spending my time on the Razorbacks Football forums, but now football in over and I should be around more. (some of you might consider that a bad thind).
Anyway I am looking for a new steering wheel for my 1970 F-100. The truck is all original so I want something that is not too wild (more of a classic look). LMC has a nice one that I really like but they did not have it in stock and they said they most likely will not get anymore. I have also looked at JEG's but didn't see anything I really liked. Thanks in advance for your help.

re: Cool Steering Wheel
Have you checked Dennis Carpenter, NPD, or Auto Krafters? They may have the steering wheel you want.

re: Cool Steering Wheel
I have this...
http://www.grantproducts.com/pc-37-9-classic-model.aspx
Kinda classic-ish I think. I drove for many years with it with NO POWER STEERING!!! Don't do that!
I'm gonna put a small diameter wheel on the F-250. The large diameter wheels rub across my thighs when I get in and out of the truck.

re: Cool Steering Wheel
The LMC ford logo wood rimmed steering wheel can often be found on ebay, but I'm not sure of the make.
I think I searched for "wood rimmed ford" or some such.
If I escape the "sell the truck for the baby" scenario I'd like to put that one in mine.
Good luck

Re: Cool Steering Wheel
Try Blue Oval Truck Parts. He carries the same line as LMC, so there is a chance he may have it. I have done a lot of business with him and he is really honest and friendly, and will help you out as much as possible. He's local for me, so I've even brought in my LMC catalog and showed him what I wanted because it was easier than looking it up in his catalog (of course he doesn't appreciate it, but he's a great guy, so he jokes with me a little, and always tells me, "Next time bring my catalog in to order!"lazyj70 wrote: LMC has a nice one that I really like but they did not have it in stock and they said they most likely will not get anymore

I just removed a 1970 3 spoke factory steering wheel and horn button from a wrecking yard truck to put in my 1968 daily driver. I have the 1972 column in my 1968 (from rebuilding my column shift 3 speed column). The shaft on the 1972 column is longer than the shaft on the 1970 and the factory steering wheel is different on the 1972. I don't think the '72 style steering wheel was used in the '71, but I'm not sure. I went back to the yard and removed the column to get the shaft from it and the center column shaft is about 1" shorter in the 1970. The 1970 steering wheel still fit the 1972 column.
A lot of people like the after-market type steering wheels. I actually go looking for the original steering wheels and take the Grant style steering wheels out of vehicles I buy and go back original.
The yard I got my steering wheel at has a 1970 or 1971 that I believe has a good original 3 spoke steering wheel in it. When I was there about a week and a half ago the truck was still up by the building and not out in the yard. It has a GM V-8 drivetrain in it, of all things. I will get the steering wheel if it is still there when the truck gets put in the yard.

I snagged this one off eBay... It'll go on the '79 tilt column once I get that project going...
I liked that it was a Ford wheel, used on some Mustangs/Broncos I believe in the '79-85 range.

Re: re: Cool Steering Wheel
That's the reason I'm changing out my wheel. The factory wheel is fine but it's just too big. There is no room between my gut and the steering wheel and I can't handle that. It makes me feel fatter than I am.72stepside wrote:I have this...

I think I'll go with the wheel like you have. That's about as classic as you can get.

I'd do a swap for the Ford style, Ford part numbered small wheel, if I couldn't find another wheel. I actually completely forgot that Ford did use that wheel for a few years. I did install a 1980 - 1986 Ford Pickup digital clock in my 1968.
Remember, if you don't have power steering you'll play 4377 (turn 'em upside down) trying to turn that small wheel in your truck. Although it might be a slightly tight squeeze the big steering wheel has it's advantages w/o p/s.
