Brighter back up lights? (INSTALLED w/ Pics)

Post by 72stepside »

Anybody ever added fog lamps for back up lights? I've been looking at doing this to the F100 cause the little ones built into the tail lamps are pretty weak. I thought about picking up some rectangular fog lamps from Autozone or Wal-Mart and giving it a try.

You will want to power them off the battery using a relay, the stock wiring probably wont like the load of the fog lights. :2cents:

You can use the $10 tractor lights that they sell. Then put an aircraft landing bulb in. That is what I had on my Ranger. I got mine from Napa. The bulbs were $20.

Chris,

Thunderfoot's right about the wiring, (it would melt down under the load of a 100 watt bulb). Seperate circuit with it's own relay, (then use the existing back-up light cicuit to energize the relay).

Like Fordman said is an easy fix for now.

Didn't think of LED'S. I'll try that and let you all know how it goes.

You mean something like these?

I'm doing fog lights through a relay. I bought 30 ft of 10ga wire today. Stay tuned...

Ya, I put a fog light on the back of my 82 I had. It really helps.

Chris,

High fives to ya' man!

That's the way it should be done.

So many guys "butcher" our trucks with questionable wiring. :cuss:

Ummmm the idiot at Lowes sold me, the idiot buyer, #6 wire instead of #10. I discovered this last night. I'm gonna try to take it back and get something a bit more appropriate for the application.

I bought a relay last night. Now I have to figure out what lights I want and where to mount them.

Stay tuned...

Well, I finally got everything together and wired up. See the pics below...

I got aux. driving lights from Advance Auto ($17) that are 55 watts each. I powered them through a relay from Advance ($6) and 30 feet of #10 wire from Lowes ($11.50). All together I probably have $50 in the whole thing.

I had to make brackets which I mouned to the bumper bolts inside the bumper. Nice, neat, tight installation that is MUCH brighter than just those back up lights in the tail lamps.

 Those look good and very nice install of them

I like your tailgate 8)

I had to look at your receiver hitch a couple of times... Looked like it had a "bowtie" plug in it then I figured out it was just the mount plates for the safety chains and the angle of the pic in the dark
