rebuilding a starter
this is on my 94 351 mini starer. i got a used one from the junk yard. the price was right. it makes a growling sound after it starts and i let off the key. the bushing is dry. what kind of grease should i put in the bushing to get me down the road until i can get a new starter. what grease will alst the longest? moly? wheel bearing grease? or maybe some litium?

I would use the silicone grease... I get mine at NAPA, it's called sil-a-glide... I use this when doing my brake jobs as well plus other stuff...

If it Looks good and Works good then it's ok by me. Everything has its issues from time to time...

Are you referring to the starters with the external solenoid that rides on it off to the side?
I have dismantled and cleaned the 1992 4 Cylinder and the 1993-1995 4.0 V-6 starters and that has fixed them. The solenoid gets dirty inside of the plunger area in the middle and they stop working.

no i took it apart yesterday bcause the bushing was dry. i put moly grease on the shaft end that was dry. the bushing is worn so its not goign to last very long. the next time the weather is good enough i'm goign to pull it out and put a different end cap and new brushes in it. that should fix it for a while.
