Camper Special

Post by 1970CamperRanger »

I have the Master Diagram for the electrical System on my 1970 F-250 Camper Special Ranger, but is there anything I should take in to account that wouldn't be in the diagram but would be on my truck? Also, does anyone have any pictures of how their electrical is rigged up? Most of the wiring on my truck looks like a rats nest, the only electrical that works is the Headlights and Windshield Wipers, pretty bad eh? Any help that can be offered would be much appreciated.

Headlights only or headlights and tail lights?

Check your fuses first. Power will run through wiring that is tied into knots. Some of your lighting is fused, like the instrument lights, stop lights and so on.
Too many projects, too little time, but.. lovin' it!

I believe that the Camper Specials all had the lights on the front fenders so the wiring is a little differant there... Check out this diagram for the 69 it will be the same for your 70 http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... _81-85.jpg
Also, the camper wiring... http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... camper.jpg
Not sure if you have overhead cab lights or not but this is the diagram for them... http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... arkers.jpg

Lots more diagrams here... http://www.fordification.com/wiring.htm

And :hi: and :wel: to the site!

Taillights, turn signals, canopy light, hazard lights, basically everything electrical, besides the headlights and windshield wipers, tomorrow I'm going to a wrecking yard to see if I can get a used wiring harness or two, at worst I might be able to see what all I need, over the years people have done horrible things to my truck, going to have to redo the wiring from front bumper to rear.
Thanks basketcase0302, I've printed out a copy of that diagram already, was just a little worried about redoing the wiring and missing all the Camper hook-ups.

Depending on how much of the wiring your going to replace when you go to the junk yard try to keep the harness the same as yours... In other words if your dash has the gauges be sure the truck your getting the harness from has gauges and not idiot lights ( this is a big difference in the dash harness) Also, the 70 is the only year that has the particular plug for the instruments like it's got so other years will not work (Plug will not work) :2cents:

most of the camper wiring is under the truck on a pigtail that you can see in thediagrams. the roof lights will be on a different block of some kind i think over on the pasenger side kick plate. the fender lights i think jumper off of the parking running lights on the inner fenders wiring harness.

Alright, another question, is there anywhere I can find out how many feet of which kinds of wire I would need to build my own wiring harness? Having some trouble finding one pre-manufactured so I guess I might have to build my own, I have most of the connectors already, just need some wire crimpers.

i am unsure which parts you would be rewiring. so what i would do is take the connectors apart that i was going to rewire such as the tail light harness. and then i would have the correct wire size and color cut from a spool i bought. to redo that indivdual harness. if your goin gto takle the mian cab harness that is a mess. and would require unwrapping the tape on all of it. and then just take your measurements for each wire and replace them one at a time so as not to be mixed up as to what and where. they do make aftermarket harnesses generic type of ones that mihgt not have the cs wiring added onto it. or you might be able to ask for the wirning harnesses in the parts wanted to save some time making a harness.

I'm betting it has been cobbled on by POs over the years, too. I'd say do a search here for 'harness'... there's been a number of discussions on different available sets if you want to redo the whole thing.
