Alternator Compatibility

Will an alternator from a 1969 with a 360 engine work in a 1968 with a 390? Thanks.

yes it will bolt in and work properly.

heck wit hthe matching volt reg and the wires matched correctly a 84-92 Ford Vans' 100 Amp alternator will work.

And its even the same alternat in many ford vehicles clear into the early nineties.

even the same between small and big block.

rjewkes, do you have a 100 amp alternator on your truck? If so, how long have you now had it on your truck?

Those newer desing Ford alts. have some problems, for one all the juice goes through a spade clip and they are notorious for melting down on the connector, they even come with a new connector most of the time now. Still a bad design.

gadd, No not yet but have two sitting on a shelf. they are identical to the older alts. except that the wiring goes on the top instead of behind.

I plan to use one on the 70 crew. I'll let you know.

The reason I asked is I had put a high amp alternator on a vehicle I had some time ago, sooooome time ago, that didn't require more than a 65 or 75 amp alternator. That vehicle has been passed along to someone else a long time ago, but one thing I did seem to have is short-lived batteries. I kinda think (not assume) if you are constantly sending all that current to the battery, and the vehicle doesn't need all of it to operate all of the toys and accessories in it that the alternator may shorten your battery's life. I'm not sure, but it was unusual that I had the problem after I did the swap.

Has anyone else out there done a swap to a high-amp alternator and seemed to have this problem too?
