armrest removal for dummies?

Post by 4th effie n counting »

I was going to have a neighbor make me a couple armrests out of oak, but I can't figure out how to get mine off.
67 f100- I can't get a 3/8 drive socket in the opening, and i'm not sure what size the bolt is. Of course a wrench won't go inside there either. :?
I mean surely there isn't some "special" tool for this.

you have to have a skinny deep 3/8 socket.

I like to use a 1/4 inch drive, 3/8 deep socket on an extension.

You can use a 3/8 drive, but they tend to get stuck in the hole and fight you a little

thats what i do.
arm rests are the hardest part to get off of in the interior of a bump to me.
when we were at a parts truck place, i couldnt get a arm rest off with that setup that i always use, then my dad gets his leathermen, stickes it in a socket and gets it off in seconds lol

the bolt is 3/8" or what size? when i said 3/8 i meant drive size socket, i assumed that it would be a 7/16 bolt.
but we all know what "assume" means

Like this. You have to kind of jiggle the socket around as you can't feel it on the bolt very well.

I've found that it's easier to use a nut-driver rather than a ratchet/socket, since I always seem to get the darned socket stuck in there.

That's good advice. Come to think of it, that's what always happens to me!

that is a good idea with the nut driver. thats why i had always used a deep socket so i could pull it out with pliers once it got stuck in there.

Cool, thanks guys, was beginning to think I was maroon.

In regard to the 67 armrests, are they changeable from one side to the other, since they don't contain the latches?
a local yard has in a 67 1 ton with a good drivers door for $75 i might try to get it. My drivers door at moment is off a 68 or later 250. It is in fine condition i just want the 67 style latches. I haeven have all the latches and hardware from the original door.
