turn signal switch wiring question???

Hey Guys...

I sorta have a delimma...
I am working on my steering column getting ready to swap it over to PS from manual.
The canceling cam is broken, so I bought a new one...
now I can't find the stupid thing for nothin'
I do have a good working switch w/a good cam....
I was gonna swap it onto the '68 column, but the colors don't match...
They both have 8 wires, but they are differant colors.
Can someone tell me which colors I should match on the plugs (the '68 has two plugs) for the '71 switch to work on my '68.

Are the colors just variations of the colors, like solid dark blue and solid light blue, and perhaps a green with a narrow stripe versus a green or a darker green with a wider stripe of the same color? Can you post pics of both column connector ends?

Are the ends of the wires all male on both plugs of the '68 and all male on the '71 harnesses?

Yeah l1k2gadd...

the ends are all male...

The '68 has 8 wires and two plugs... one with 6 and one with 2
The '71 switch has 8 wires, but only one plug.
Only about 3 of the wire colors are the same, the other 5 are differant.
I'm nearly 100% sure that it will interchange.
Because people put the newer PS columns in their trucks without having to change switches, they just change the plugs to match the trucks female end...

my bad, there are actually 7 wires on each switch...

I just looked at the plugs and didn't notice the each plug had one empty hole...

I just came in and got cleaned up... it's stinkin' cold out...
there's talk about it dropping into the teens tonight.

I did get the column completely dismantled, sanded and got the first coat of Harbor blue.
I ordered a new column top bearing...
The only place I could find one was at the Ford dealer... at the tune of $18.00. At least it should be there by 8:30 am.

I love old Fords, but I hate giving the Ford company a penny of my money.
This will be the first part I have gotten from the dealer in this whole project.
I wanna put another coat of paint on the column before I run down to the dealer... it will be dry by the time I get home and I can start the assembly.

I'll get the wire colors for you in the morning before I leave...

lmc has the bearings for 5.00 i think the top and bottom bearings are the same bearings

Yeah Fordman they are the same... thats what I learned from the dealer.

Unfortunatly, I need it by tomorrow...
By the time I paid next day delivery from LMC truck it would be more than the $18 I can get it at the dealer...
But I will remember that for the future... I am trying to have everything ready to install the engine back in the frame by Saturday.
To meet that deadline, I have to have the column ready to install by tomorrow night.
My plan is to have the frame ready and firewall ready to primer and paint by tomorrow night, then come home and reassemble the steering column for installation on thursday with the power steering box.
I also wanna have the power brake booster ready to install as well.
I got my work cut out for me the next couple of days..

ok along with the factory diagrams on the site here are two scans of a lmc instructions that show there wiring colors and what they go to. but also what i wrote down while doing my trun signal plug. this should be able to help you i hope. if you have any color code question ask and i think i can figure it out.

Opps, I posted my responce in the wrong thread...
Anyway, that chart you posted was spot on...

I just got back from the dealer with the column bearings...
I found out why they were so expensive.
They came 4 to a package...
So it looks like I'll have a pair for sale...
$10 plus the ride if anyone is interested...

Hey fordman...

The chart thing that has the two differant switch colors.
I made a diagram of where each color wire came out of the plugs.
I was going to put the column back together this evening, but the paint was still tacky... probably because of the cold temps here.
Tomorrow, I am gonna hook up a heater in the bus to bring the temp up and see if that helps.

im glad this helped i also hope it helps others who need to rewire there columns. i have seen so many of the plugs cut off of columns that it is unreal. it is kind of like a standard thing to do. no that it is right though.

Is the '70 column the same? It has 8 pins (7 used) for turn and 4 for the neutral switch.

the nuetraul switch is seperate from the turn signal switch. the pic i posted was for 65-69 up to serial numbers G30,000, three wires have been changed from the original colors. the 70 colors will be real close to these. i think if you took the original diagrams and both things i posted you could figure out what is what and how they go back together.

I refurbish a lot of Ford turn signal switches and to answer your question is that they are interchangable. Different years have different colors on some of the wires but the switch is the same. If you need a diagram of which wires go to which connectors let me know and I will send them to you. I have an adapter that I made up for testing the 67 to 69 turn signal switches. It lets me plug in the earlier 2 connector switch to the 70 to 72 single connector on my 71 4X4, thus allowing me to test both style of switches.
