Which steering wheel puller

Post by 69twotone »

I have never pulled a steering wheel before. I am looking at buying a puller. Any reccomendations? Advice on what to do or not do as I pull it?

i wouldn't use one with jaws on it. that will break the steering wheel coating into a bunch of chunks. but the three or i mean four type like i put up in that auction will work.

most major chain parts houses will let you use one for free under their loaner tool program and it will be a very high quality one (usually a nice set in a plastic case). I bought a 3 armed one over 2 decades back and never been sorry (back before loaner tool program got popular). You need to also kinda "bump" from dash direction sometime to break it loose if it's never been off. Be very careful to not cross thread your large nut back on steering column in middle when you reassy, if you'll use a tad of anti-seize, it'll never be a problem for anyone else to remove further on down the road. I had an old mechanic show me the easy way and it works. Poor man's steering wheel puller. Loosen the nut (you might want get a spare), but don't take it all the way off. Back off just enough so the end of the shaft is below the threads. Put your knees behind the steering wheel and put a bind on it, pressing it toward you. When you're positioned right and have pressure on it. smack the nut with a hammer (that's why the spare nut). It'll pop right off. That's why you leave the nut on it 'cause if you don't, it'll break your face! A puller works best though. Buy a good one, it's multi purpose.

i have done that leave the nut thing on in the past. it works. but it also can sometimes screw up the threads on the shaft too as well as the nut. believe me i have had it happen more than once. i trashed on in a junkyard doing that as well as my trucks column.

Hope you better luck than Ihad getting one off my 72. I broke bolts and screwed up the puller I borrowed from Advance Auto. I still couldn't get it to budge even after hitting the center to jar it loose. End result was a dremel. It got it first try.......in about 10 pieces anyway.

it never hurts to start soaking w/PB blaster or WD-40 (or about anything that'll penetrate) as far in advance as your patience will allow).
I have also popped them off before pounding with my palms, but that was when I was 40 pounds heavier and not as old and breakable as I am becoming.

the last one i pulled was a mustang wheel from a 67 i have. it was jammed so tight on there i had the puller as tight as it would go and i beat the heck out of the end of the puller to get it to jar loose. it finally came off with a big pop. i thought the puller slipped off. and i did have my knees pulling up on the wheel too.

This comes at the perfect time. I am going to pull my steering wheel and replace with a nicer old one. Since I have never done this before I am looking forward to a lot of swearing and maybe some new teeth. :D

I think mine is KD brand? It was a really expensive one nearly 25 years ago when I bought it and it is totally effortless. I've pulled maybe 6 steering wheels in total in that timeframe, but it sure makes it easy. BUT, as I mentioned, most of the chain stores have really super nice pullers in sets they'll let you use on loaner tool program, all you have to do is secure the loaner tool with your credit card and they refund the money when you return the tool.
