Is there an easy way of opening a locked glove box?

Post by Physics Guy »

The PO of my truck could not find the round key, and the glove box is locked. Any suggestions?
My TriPower doesn't get very good mileage. What's the problem?

well you could get under it and destroy the glovebox to get what you want out of it :D

maybe drill the lock out and get a new one :dk:

A flathead screwdriver works nicely, tape it up with electrical tape to avoid scratching the paint.

I haven't tried that!!!!

As to crow bars, bombs, and for that matter plasma cutters, I am trying not to screw up a nice dash!

If you have any other Ford round keys (if I am correct the round trunk key works the glove box) you can try them in the glove box lock. I believe the glove box lock only uses 3 tumblers instead of the 5 that trunk locks use.

As you continually and repeatedly insert and remove the different key(s) put slight turning pressure on the lock cylinder (again as you insert and remove the key in succession). You may catch the tumblers just right and get the lock to turn.

I have done this many times, with success, and I also use this method of opening locks (trunk and glove box) in wrecking yards when a trunk of a car or a glove box is locked and there isn't a key to be found in the car to open them.

(Edit) What you are trying to do is you are trying to "catch" the lock tumblers at a "happy medium" point where the lock cylinder will then turn. I just used this method to get a Dentside keylock hood release unlocked in the wrecking yard I go to.
Too many projects, too little time, but.. lovin' it!

a locksmith can pick the lock. its not that hard if you know how and have a tool that will do it.
