Fuel gauge not working

Post by Duke »

My fuel gauge just recently is only reading a little above full when I fill the tank up. Wondering if my sending unit is bad, maybe the float? Is there a way to fix it without having to replace it? If the guage or wiring was bad shouldn't the guage not work at all or read full all the time? You guys have probably discussed this alot. I tried a search for past postings but it brings up alot of different stuff. Figured I'd get a faster answer by posting a new post than trying to search for an old one. :D Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hey Duke, I just want to be clear on the symptoms. Is the gauge reading just above "full" or just above "empty" when you fill up?

there is a tutorial on this about how to check if the sender is working correctly. there is also a way to adjust the voltage to the guage in that tutorial.

Sorry about that it must have been to late last night for me to think properly! I meant just above empty.

Pulled my sender unit out moved the arm up and my guage went to full. I then shook the float and it was full of fuel. I work at a chevy dealership (I get crap for that all the time) and we took a float off of a GM warranty fuel sender and with a little bit of modifcation, my fuel guage is now working good. I had to bend the end of the rod where it wraps around the float to kinda make a hook to go around the GM float and use some wire, kinda like hot fence wire but smaller diameter, to attach it to the rod. The fence mendin' I've done finally came in handy for something else other than fences! Kind of a redneck fix but its working.
