Vent Window Rubber Change

Post by cjhall »

OK, I got the anti-rattle kit and new vent window seals from LMC. I am using the short how-to article in the back of the Dennis Carpenter catalog as a general guide.

It tells you to drill out the rivets that hold the vent window seal to the vent window frame. It makes no mention of replacing those rivets, not does it make any mention of using any type of sealant.

I could use advise on those two issues as I hope to tackle this project this weekend.

Thanks for your time,

Chris

i am pretty sure you have to put some sort of rivets back in. i have never heard of any kind of sealant being put on them to seal them or help hold them in.

No sealant is necessary and you have to figure some way to get those rivets in there. I did some myself and had a glass place to others. Here's a couple of ways of doing it. There was a thread on this awhile back and I think someone came up with a better solution. Do a search for it. Good luck.

Well, I'm finished with the vent window change. The seals from LMC fit perfectly. I ended up Riveting the seal to the window channel and using a small bead of sealant for good measure.
I did have to peen the rivet over a little in the window channel because I thought it might interfere with the window going up and down. Everything worked out great. The most difficult part was getting the old rubber out of the door. After 38 years, they had grown fond of each other !!!

Thanks for all the help

I worked on mine today. Those rivots are a royal pain to get out.

Hey Eman Did the rivets spin on you. Everyone of mine spun around, I carefully measured and drilled from the other side. It was not perfect but I used a slightly larger rivet and it worked just fine.

If the recent weather patterns continue, I won't see too much more rain out here in Nor Cal. I'll have to wash the truck to see if they leak !!!

Yes they all spun and I ended up drilling a slightly larger hole so I may have to use larger rivots as well. I wonder if they have them at ACE

Did anyone find a source for the rivets? I am installing my npd seals and they did not come with the rivets either. I check with DC and the catalog claims theirs do not have the rivets either.
Thanks!

FYI, I ditched the rivets and used weatherstrip sealant. Works great!

When I did mine I used split rivets. Like these:

Get some with as flat a head as possible. I got mine at a Mom & Pop hardware store.
