you have to pull that key. you will have to work it around to the open side to get it out. those are fun.

There's a cotter key retaining the sheath through the housing plate. Bend a 16 penny nail and grab the nail with some vise grips, put the nail hook over the C part of the cotter key and pull till ya fart...

It'll come off. Other styles have locking finger that you need to use a 1/2" closed end wrench to slide ofer the fingers to release them.

That's the clip that must be removed. It's shaped like the (crude) illustration in the lower-right corner. Pull that clip, and the cable will pop out.

You can put a flat piece of steel against the ends of that clip and then give it a whack with a hammer. It should pop right off, or at least enough where you can grab it with a pair of pliers or ViseGrips.

Unscrew the knob then remove the nut that holds the switch to the dash.

ha i must be doing it the hard way then. because that looked to easy. i was dumb and tried to spin my pin around so i could just pull it out. i never thoought about just spreading the pin and pulling the cable out.

I spin the pin/clip around and remover it with a cotter pin puller.

This thread was VERY helpful to me last night in replacing my parking brake assembly! I tried doing it as pictured (spreading the pin), and that helped some but I just couldn't get it that way. Even with the grips, I could not pry it far enough apart. I finally rotated it around to where the "loop" (round) side is, slid in a screwdriver and pryed at it. Going that route, it slid right off and then shot across the cab. lol

To get it back on, I just put the round end into some needle nose vise grips and slid it on 1/2 way, then popped it the rest of the way with a tack hammer.

I thought the hardest part was getting the ball out of the clasp that holds it. Used a combo of screwdriver and pry bar tool to get that out.

Oh, that clip is REAL easy to remove. Just wait till you try to set the parking brake one day, and it will fly out and hit you in the leg. In two pieces. :(

It's almost as much fun taking them out as it is putting a replacement in.
