68 CS Project: update 4/16/09

Yeah, Me too, I was pleasently surprized...
It's a nice shiny flat black(if that makes sense)...
I'm gonna try to get over to Kyle's today and take a couple of pics of yesterday's progress...
We got a lot done... but still have a ways to go...
I had to order another quart of the Rust Encapsulater from Eastwood so I can paint the radiator support, the other fender skirt and have enough to do the floor in the cab.
I'm gonna cut out the real bad part and clean up the rest, then see what else needs to be done short of replacing the floor pans...
I'm not a welder and taking it to a shop would be pretty expensive.
I have some sheet metal that I can cut to the size I need to patch the holes and can treat the metal then pop-rivet the patch pieces in myself.
That will work pretty well until I can get it done right...

That rust encapsulator seems a lot like POR15 - about the same price too. And is available in a rattle can now. Wonder if it's UV sensitive also? And do you recall the 'tack-free' time?

Check out www.Eastwood.com for the technical info on the rust encapsulator. It is not suposed to be UV sensitive and was totally dry the next day, even in the freezing temps we have been having here in WA.
You can finish paint a finish coat on top of it, but you don't have to.

looking good, man your really kickin butt on that thing.. I'm jealous, been to damn cold here to even think about going outside to work on mine..though maybe this week its supposed to warm up about 40 degrees keep up the great work!

Same here. Kyle and I were bundled up workin' in his barn, and it was about 30 and snowing outside...
Kyle went over to the house, when he came back he said you know, it's colder in here than it is outside.
Friday, my hands were so cold that I dropped the PS box on my the tip of my little finger (right on the joint) and I hardly felt it. I just kept right on workin'.
It was cold enough that the cold actually helped keep the swelling down until I got home and warmed up.
I had a church gig on friday night, and the tip of my little finger on my left was so swollen that I couldn't bend it to make a chord.
When I tried to put any pressure on it to push down the strings, it about sent me through the roof.
Michelle, one of my singers, prayed for me and I was able to play nearly 3 hours without feeling it at all...
I woke up Sat Am to go back to Kyle's and work on the truck and it was ok, but by the end of the day, my finger had swollen up again...
This morning I asked Michelle to pray for my finger again... once agian, the swelling went down and I was able to play guitar pretty much all day.
It hurts like the dickens now...
I joked about workin' on the truck until I was black and blue...
At that time, I was talkin' about the paint colors all over my hands...

It was a wonderful day to be workin' on the CS project...

I have taken this week off just to work on the CS...
I am hoping to drive it home next Sat and have a long way to go...
I did make a pretty good dent in things today...
Here's a list of what I got done today...

the power brake install completed
(except for making any adjustments that might be necessary)
new fuel lines installed
new tune up kit installed
(cap & rotor, still need to install the protronix points eliminator)
new NGK plugs gapped and installed
new plug wires assembled and installed
trapeze connected
Eldebrock pro-flow air cleaner installed
(complete with a Ford logo chrome wing nut)
new (NAPA Gold) oil filter installed
(still gotta change the oil... got Mobil 5000 10w-30 to do that with)

I just have the fan sitting there for the pics...
I have 3 differant sized spacers so I'm not sure which one I'll need to use.

Which post on the coil does the dizzy wire go on?
Dang, I can't remember the other one...
I'm sure I'll think of it as soon as I get started on it tomorrow...

Looking good , the wire from your dizzy will go on the neg (-) side of coil. Did you not like the headers? I see you didn't reinstall them.

Hey Craftsman...

The hedders were shot...
In fact they were the catalist that got this whole part of the project goin'...
After letting the CS sit for several years (5 or 6) TheeMc got me inspired to fix the olde rig back up, but that's another story...
After I fired it up, it coughed and popped and blew the hedder flange gaskets... it sounded like a tractor.
One Saturday, I decided I would replace the gaskets...
to my dismay, the very first bolt I tried to remove broke off in the head.
I tried soaking the bolts with WD-40 everynight after work for a week, thinking that would help keep from breaking bolts...
nope, I broke 2 more.
That's when we, (my machinest buddy Kyle and I),
decided that the easiest way to fix that problem, would be to pull the engine. That was over a year ago now.
In the meantime, Kyle had a 3 foot diameter fir tree go thru the middle of his house during a huge storm last winter (Dec '06).
No one was hurt, but it did $160,000.00 damage to his house, and also delayed the CS project for a year.
In the meantime, I bought a good running '71 CS with thoughts of parting out the '68 and fixing up the '71.
Another friend convinced me to part out the '71 instead... so I did.
The '71's PO had put a stock style performance exhaust system on it less than 6 months before I got from him.
The '71 is now my bump trailer, and I have nearly all the parts I need to get the '68 CS back in shape.
I spent that whole year getting the rest of the parts I needed for the CS...
Which is how I found my bus Olde Skool...
(I was looking for a hood on craigslist and found the bus and drove it home for $200)
To get the engine out, we used a sawzall to cut the hedder pipes off at the flanges... even with the engine out 8 bolts total broke off and had to be drilled and tapped...
So that's the story about the '68 CS project...
I forgot to mention, I bought the '68 20 years ago from the original owner which played a huge part in my decision to fix it instead of the '71...
I have a lot of history with it and I know exactly what's been done to it...
Besides...
'68's ROCK !!!

Even though I didn't even touch the truck today, I got alot done...
It was so nice today, that I moved operations outside, just as I finshed cleaning up, it started to sprinkle...
I'm so tired, I might just take a shower and go to bed...

Hey Guys

Spent most of the day installing all the stuff I got painted yesterday.
It's nearly ready for new fluids and sheet metal.
Tomorrow I'll get the loose ends tied up and start installing the radiator support and sheet metal Friday...
Hopefully, I'll get finished up Saturday and fire it up and drive it home...
