I had come across this website a few years back, and with a bit of googleing I was able to find them again. not sure what they would charge but it might not be too bad if you want to keep the same radio! ;)

I am going to have to ask my dad if he remembers the radio. Kind of doubt he does. I just remember it didn't look like that one. The knbs were smaller also. It didn't have the bar to swap am to FM. You used one of the buttons on the channel buttons. Some had am on them some had FM on them.
Maybe it was a deal option on mine. Wish I had kept it but qt 15-16 it just wasn't very important. lol

I seem to recall that there was another place that would take the original radio and install updated electronics in it. That way you could retain the original look, but have much better quality and convenience. They could add jacks for MP3, etc.

I had seen it here previously in the forums but cannot find it now. I want to say that it was a company out of Minnesota.

I have seen a radio like you describe with am on a couple of the push buttons and fm on the others--they do exist but I can't find a picture of one right now--also not certain if they were factory or an aftermarket unit.

REALLY I just grabbed the plate from around a 71 in the pull a part that had the am.fm still in it. I'll have to go back and see if it's still there.
Glad to hear someone else remembers the radio like mine had. Begining to think my memory was worse than I remembered. lol

The radios without the stereo bar are probably mono radios. My parents had a Datsun 210 back when I was my son's age (scratches graying head) and it had a Motorola AM/FM radio in it. It had 3 FM presets and 2 AM presets. If you wanted FM, and the radio was playing AM, you had to hit an FM preset first before tuning to the FM station you want. I learned how to do this in about ten seconds at age 5.
