turn signal and 4 way woes

Post by kilog55 »

ok i was pulling all the fire hazard wiring out from the PO and noticed an empty flasher harness so i took the one from the turnsignals and pluges it in and i could not get the 4-ways to turn off. but when the turnsignal flasher is hooked up to the t/s's my 4 ways come on in either position of the t/s's.

now could i have a 4 way switch hooked up to the t/s's? is my 4 way switch bad cause when i pull it out to activate it moves in and out freely there is no point where it would "lock" in place.

havent tried a new flasher pack yet but i will replace both with the proper ones.

That sounds like the 4-way (emergency flasher) switch is bad and stuck on. When you turn on the turn signals it is back feeding through the 4-way switch so it turns them all on...
Try disconnecting the 4-way switch from the wire harness and see what happens with the turn signals.

Most marine batteries are Deep Cycle, which means they are designed to set for long periods of time and still be able to hold some charge. And you can run them down on voltage and recharge them back up without it killing/hurting the battery. Most normal batteries when you run them down low they wont recover when you try to charge them back up, they may do this a few times but not like a Deep Cycle, that is what they are made for... :2cents:
Some others might have some better thought on them.

:yt:

I ran a deep cycle in my '68 CS for years...
It was set up to run two batteries... one regular (for the truck) one deep cycle (for the camper) with a battery isolator to keep them both charged...
When the truck battery went bad, I didn;t have the money to buy a new battery right then, so I simply got adaptors for the cables and hooked up the deep cycle as the main battery.
My newer camper has the deep cycle battery set up inside the camper rather than under the hood of the truck...
Instead of doing a bunch of rewiring in the camper, I just carry a battery charger in the camper and hook it up to AC from the house and charge the battery that way...
When I get the truck back on the road, I wanna put an inverter on it to provide AC power so I can recharge the camper batteries from the truck.

yeah true but they just dont have the CCA capabilities like a starting battery will. plus this one is DEAD i charged it overnight and into the morning so it was fully charged i hooked it up and "thunk" dead as a doornail

swapped the red top out of the 79 in and she cranked over like lightning. but it gets awefully cold here in NEPA not as cold as further north but it will kill a battery like the marine grade i had

I'm assuming that you're talking about the 1972. I have an in-dash and a glove box mount switch in my hands. You should feel a little resistance when you pull out the in dash and or slide the glove box mount type. If not the switch is worn out. On 73 to 77 turn signal switches the 4 way flasher switch is on the turn signal switch. Those are notorius for going bad making the whole turn signal switch assembly junk ( unrepairable )! On all of the early model trucks 64 into the 80's the 4 way flashers over ride the turn signals, Basically the Emergency Flasher switch system provides constant power to both sides of the turn signal switch, even when the truck is turned off! The 64 to 72 Emergency flasher circuit in my opinion is the best as it allows for repair by replacing a switch and not the entire turn signal switch!

yeah the 72 it pulls and pushes with 0 resistance. so i will have to replace the 4 ways switch and add new flasher cans as the one on the turnsignal side is OME ford part could be the original :dk:
