67 Heater Switch Wiring

Okay... time for another good one! Actually, this should be as simple as someone taking a peek at their heater switch in a '67.

When the heater switch broke in my '67, the PO decided that it was easier to remove the wires from it and hook them up to two toggle switches instead. The original heater switch still controls the air flow, but it does NOT control the on/off or high/low functionality. The toggle switches actually work well, and one glows which is helpful in the dark, but they look crappy because they don't match, and I want it to be 'right'.

SO... I obtained a "new" 67 heater switch (the one on the left) from Mike J, and am ready to try and swap it in. Only, I can't tell what should plug into what. The switch has three prongs on the back of it. I'm assuming one is high/low, one is on/off, and the other ground? Can someone tell me which color wire (or color combination) is supposed to plug into which prong?

This diagram was the only one I could find that referred to it, but I can't tell which one goes to which prong from it, either:

Okay... Mike went and looked at his truck and told me it was RED to the steering side, ORANGE to the glove box side, and the double wire to the top.

If anyone suspects differently, please let me know!

Well... got the "new" switch all cleaned up, got on my back under the dash, and... holy crap! How did they ever expect anyone to change out one of these? I can barely get my hand back there to feel where it connects, but I have NO idea how to remove the old one and hook up the new one. :x :dk:

Does anyone have any ideas? Do I really have to remove the entire heater assembly just to swap out the switch? I do I need to find me a midget (er, little person) to stick his arm up there. Is Vern Troyer available? lol

And for what it's worth, the '67 Manual was NO help on this one. It focused way too much on the bigger trucks, which were different.

remove the radio and maybe the glove box.

The radio, maybe... but even then, I can't get my big 'ol arm in that hole. And this is nowhere near the glove box. Not sure what that would do for me.

The biggest problem is I can't see how it attaches on in the first place. Should it just slide on/off of a pin, or is there a lock washer or something keeping the cable in place?

You get to it from under the dash, but removing the radio gives you room to work on it. Removing the glove box and or ash tray and mount lets you see what you're doing.

I don't know if the switch comes off the cable or not, I pulled mine as an assembly. Here's what you do to do that:

1) Small allen set screw holds the knob to the switch. Remove the knob.

2) See the two groves inside the chrome ring? Use a screwdriver to unscrew that inner ring. Or a small pair of needle nose pliers. Switch will then push through the backside of the dash.

3) Disconnect cable where it hooks to heater box. Remove assembly.

Hey ToughOldFord... thanks for the info. I'm actually pretty comfortable with how to remove the existing switch and put in a new one... and with regard to that, I fully agree that removing the ash tray and/or radio would help. I think I can probably do that portion without issue.

My biggest problem is that, since the switch and cable in the '67 is all one assembly, I need to disconnect the OLD cable where it hooks to the heater box, and then hook up the NEW one. At the end of the cable there is a series of "loops" where it connects to the box. What holds it on there? Does it just slide off?

Anyhow... that's the part I can't see... it's jammed between the box and the firewall, with just barely enough room for my hand. And there's some sharp crap back in there, too! I really don't want to have to remove the box!

There's a small bolt holding a clamp on the end of the outer housing to a bracket that's attached to the box. The inner cable is looped on the end and slides over a post that actuates the door inside the box. Remove that bolt and clamp and then the cable sides off the post.

I have the heater box out, if you need I can take a pic in the morning.

That would be EXTREMELY HELPFUL! Assuming you have a 67, please take the pic! :thup:

You're right, that is a tight one to get to. I did get mine off before pulling the box though. IIRC I pulled the defrost tubes to get better access.

No problem, I'll get it when it gets light out. It's out of my '67 parts truck, I've sold the cables but still have the complete box.

Thanks... if I can tell from that what bolt I need to remove to release that clamp and the cable, then perhaps I can do it "flying blind". As long as removing that clamp/bracket doesn't release like 15 washers and bearings and lord-knows what else to fall off and skitter about everywhere. lol

I believe its basically like a choke cable. Just make sure you loosen the right cable, they kind of loop around each other.
the allen screw is the same size as the wiper switch screw.
67 F100 240 I6 3spd now gone :(
