Ok I need your help with my wiper arms (pics now up)

Post by itsmy72f100 »

I just cant seem to get that dam things off so before I scratch up my truck some more i could use some help. i see the little clip and have tried to move it toward the end of the wiper then pull the arm but it wont come off. This has got to be easier than I'm making it out to be. I am replacing the pivot shaft seals so that my cab wont be flooded during the next rain like it was tuesday. At least I know what rusted the floorpans out now. I got a pic but cant get it off the dam camera. I'm srry for the language but 2hours spent tring to get it off frustrates the heck out of me not to mention the scratching of the paint.

Update here is the pic that I got BEFORE I fixed it

This is how much it leaks look at the left bottom bottom corner(its a puddle)

you have to pull that clip back from the spindle and twist and turn and pry upward on the arm. they can be a little stubbord at times to get off.

The little 'hook" in the locks can fit a medium sized common or slotted screwdriver blade from the side edge of the screwdriver and you can try to twist the screwdriver outward (downward) using the wiper arm as a leverage point. Be careful not to pry too hard because I actually had a clip drop out of the wiper arm and luckily fall onto the cowl and not into the cowl in front of the windshield.

Sometimes the locks get sticky (stuck) in the corrosion and / or dirt and build-up in the underside of the wiper arms. Once the clips are in the dropped down position the wiper arms will usually come up off of the wiper transmissions as you rock them upward by hand. You will need to take the downward (toward the windshield) pressure off of the outer spring-loaded end of the wiper arm to get them to come off easier.

I have tried using the arm as a pivot point, tried jiggleing in a VERY angry and aggresive manner but the arm will not budge. Then I took the bolts off pivot shaft assembly and tried again. How can something seeming so easy be so darn hard to get off. (then again I've said that about a few girls too lol)

Have the locking clips been released on them?

Look at the underside of the wiper arms right next to the wiper transmissions (the things that turn that the wiper arms are attached to). There is a tiny, thin piece of flat folded steel that keeps the wiper arm from flying off of the transmission end as it turns back and forth. Those clips are the ones I am asking about. I can see if I can go downstairs and try to take a picture of one if you need me to (if the picture comes out good in the dark).

I finally got mine off after I took the windsheild off and was able to use a hammer and screwdriver, then it was easy as pie. I hate them.

I have the problem getting my Donor truck's driver's wiper arm off. I removed the locking clip, which I can get a picture of if you'd like, but I am thinking of trying to use a pair of pliers to remove the arm and post the results. It's dark again, so let me quickly run down and try and I'll get back upstairs in a minute or two.

(edit) GOT IT! another edit and pics to follow shortly!!

(edit, again) Ok, here are some pics. The first two are showing the wiper arm lock in the locked position and the lock in the unlocked position. After you unlock it take a pair of needlenose pliers and carefully remove the lock before going to the next step. REMEMBER the lock can fall into the cowl. Keep a good grip on it with the needlenose when removing it.

Look at those two pictures. The little bent piece of steel (probably some kind of spring steel since it is magnetic) has to be moved down on the wiper arm.

Then, remove it.

Then take a slotted (common) screwdriver and place it sideways, as shown in the picture below, and set it between the ridge on the windshield end of the wiper transmission and the wiper arm (not the part that holds the wiper arm that spins when the wipers are on). Lift the wiper arm up off of the windshield to remove the downward pressure from the wiper arm where it sits on the windshield. Move the screwdriver back and forth sideways, in and out against the ridge and the outer edge of the wiper arm and do this same thing on the inside lip of the wiper arm and transmission ridge. Move back to the outer end again and the wiper arm should start to lift up. Once it starts to move you should be able to complete the job by hand.

Be sure to reinstall the lock clip with the fold in the clip outward so it locks the wiper arm back in place (folds outward and drops in under the spinning part of the wiper transmission) when you reinstall it later.
