trailer wiring harness

what's the best way to hook one up? not really into the little blue plastic "splicers" that i see on most hookups. any good ideas?

scarp the plastic from the wiring to the lights under the back of the bed and solder the new wire to it. then take some of the plasidip stuff and coat the soldered place in the wiring.

I actually used a rear wiring harness from another bump and plugged it inbetween the original harness. That way I wouldn't damage the truck so if someone wanted to take it off the truck would be normal without a bunch of splices and stuff.

I will be doing the same thing that cghstrojan08 did. I cut the two ends off from under a wrecking yard Bump with long tails on them to work with. I am going to make my own plug-in add-a-trailer-light-harness connector to my original taillight harness so I don't have to hack my original harness up connecting trailer plug wires to it.

I've found that the connectors on the ends of the tail light buckets are generic in nature and you can pick them up from almost any auto parts store. I make custom harnesses for all of my pickups by adding an extension/adapter coming from inbetween the tail light buckets and the rear harness. It costs about $6.00 to make one and beats the heck out of chopping up or splicing wires into the small harness at the back of the truck, and it's removable if so desired. The only problem would arise if you're using electric brakes and then you'd have to run a feed wire down the frame rail from the electric brake switch.

Underdog97, I haven't thought about tapping into the wiring back there. That too is a great idea! Everything you need to make the connections is right behind both tail lights, including a place to ground the white wire of the trailer connector.
