ALT

Post by 1971fordcustom »

Well My alt is jumping all over the place! All I did to the truck was splice two wires back for my tail lights sence they was not working! Well I pulld the tail light plugs so I woud not have any tail lights and the alt was still jumping! I put in a new brake switch so I took that off and the alt was still jumping! What in the ______ Is going on? Is it my alternator? or Voltage Regulator? Fuse? When I speed up the engine the Alt stops jumping as bad. I can still drive the truck but I don't want to come out to a dead BAT when I have the girl i've been dateing with me!

If it was my wireing job then when I pulld the two plugs it shud of stoped.

What do you mean the alt is jumping? are you talking about the guage?

could just be a bad guage. could have a loose cable on its backside.

could need new belt(s) on the whole engine.

yu cna have a decent autoparts store check your charging system.

That is usually a good sign that the Voltage Regulator is going out... When you turn on the headlights do they change brightness a bunch with the engine RPM? This is also a sign that it is the Voltage Regulator.

I don't know but I'll find out tonight. I don't think the head lights get brighter. And one other thing I just found! When I pull my key out my gas gage stays the same, It don't go to E like has befor when I pull the key.

rjewkes Yes Im talking about the gage! I know its not the bets they are just about new.

I'll pull the cluster this week if I have time. But for now I'll just pull the Battcable

the voltage regulator is bolted to the core support under the passenger side horn next to the battery.
