what is under padded dash?

Post by Kurt Combs »

I was thinking that I might just remove my 72 bump's padded dash and go with all metal. Does that dash look ok under all that padding and vinyl?

I like it without the dash pad. The mounting holes are kind of an eye sore. But a good upgrade. And the paint is usually like knew under there.

Do it you will like it

My Bump was "Dashpad-less" when I got it. I believe the sun faded the heater control illumination plastic from all of the exposure to the southern sun because it looks whit-ish with the headlights or parking lights on. My instrument panel lights are whit-ish colored too (unless they are supposed to be), not green-ish like all of my other vehicles. I found one of those carpet dash-mats in a '72 that had a Semi-Holes embroidered patch in the center section of it that I removed from it. I think the dash looks better covered. I am inactively looking for a good dash pad for mine and when I find one I will remove the dash-mat.

and if you decide to go without a dash pad, make sure you tear the defroster vents out of the dash pad and use them on the metal dash. they have screw holes and everything to put them on the metal (did ford make the screw holes purposly for people not wanting the pad :? )

here is what my 71's looks like:

I found a ballpoint pen my mom stole from the government when she used to work for Social Security years ago under my original dash pad. It still worked.

I stared at the dash for about 10 minutes without the pad, but I decided to put a pad on it.

Some of us get all the breaks, I wish I'd of found $100.00 bills lining the underneath of my dash pad, all I've found so far has been petrified ants and a couple of bee carcasses. Fordman must've got DB Cooper's old Ford truck, And we wondered where he hid all of that money from the Hijacking, it was under Fordman's part's truck dash all these years (LOL) Can I come over and check behind the gas tank? Please!

I have mine off and like it, but I would put a nice one on if I found one.

You also might want to check to make sure it is legal to take it off in your area. Some placees require it, as it was there for safety. (head impact)

i think it would look good if those big a$$ slots wern't there. also a good condition non-cracked pad just makes for a good looking interior. imho.

I hope you have small hands lol

there are just nuts holding it in. but, theres a bunch. scattered on the underside of the dash, there are many nuts that you just have to get to with a wrench. there is one hard to find hidden nut on each inner corner of the pad on the drivers and pass. side. dont forget those.

i think there are 14 nuts.
