71 F-100 Turn Signal

Post by dhawthorne15 »

I just changed out my turn signal cam in my 71, after re-installing the wheel...the truck will not start. I followed the diagram on the wiring but not sure if there is something I missed. Any suggestions?

Must be something with the neutral safety switch. Its located on the bottom of the column near the firewall in the cab. See if you can move it one way or the other while holding the key as you would to start it.

Or just move the shifter a little bit each way while holding the key to see if it will crank. That would be the easier way. Sometimes I don't think.

I already tried the moving the shifter while trying to start. Didnt work. I was thinking neutral safety switch but didnt know where to find it. I looked at the fuse box and if the fuse for the starter is the one on the top its possible its blown so I will look at that possibility on next Saturday when my "weekend mechanic" shop re-opens.

The turn signal switch assembly runs on an entirely different circuit than the Neutral safety switch. The manual transmission trucks had a bypass connector that was simply plugged into the connector that connects to the neutral safety switch on the automatic trucks. If you think it may be your neutral safety switch try using 2 jumper wires on the neutral safety switch connector. There are 4 prongs on the connector and the way to by pass it is to run the jumper wires from the inside to the outside prongs next to each other. Try starting your truck and if it cranks over you've isolated it to the neutral safety switch. If it still won't crank over the problem lies else where in the starting circuit.

The starter circuit does not have a fuse to my knowledge.

Does it crank over, but not start or not even crank over?

The fuse on the top is for the heater. the layout of the fuse box panel goes as follows:
HEATER
TURN SIGNALS
INSTRUMENT PANEL
left side: DOME right side CIGAR LIGHTER

Of the two blades on the side of the fuse box panel the top one is for the radio and the other for use as an auxiarlly feed.

There is a fusible link on the main power wire coming off of the positive cable side of the solenoid but if it was blown would kill all power to everything in the truck not just the starting circuit or turn signals (everything) You could also have a bad solenoid or if the little wires were taken off of it and put back on backwards would cause it to not even turn over ( I've done that one myself! ) or they could be broken from age as they're only push on connectors I put ring terminals on mine and bolt them on.
