Rear Lights and Turn Signals

I know there's another active thread with pretty much the same title, but I'm having similar (not the same) problems and didn't want to hijack that thread.

Here is the situation: 1969 F100 three-on-the-tree. I do not have a back-up lamp switch anywhere in my truck. When I turn on the parking or head lights the back-up lamps come on. The wires exiting the steering column have been cut and then spliced back to the connector incorrectly. I think there is also a wire missing. I think sometime in the past the turn signal switch began malfunctioning and someone botched a job of repairing it. The PO cut the wires to all the back lights (near the bumper) and spliced in new wires running the length of the truck. These wires ended in a knot underneath the cab and were connected to nothing. I took them out and connected the original wiring back up and it works fine (there is continuity and all lamps light when their respective leads are connected to 12v). I have both wiring connectors to the steering column disconnected at this time as the incorrect wiring drains the battery.

Here are the questions: If the wires to the turn signal switch are disconnected, will the brake lights still light when the brake is pressed (mine do not)? How many wires are supposed to come out of the steering column? What does the backup lamp switch look like (I'm going to the salvage yard later this week to see if I can't pick up a working TSS among other things and would like to get one if they came stock)?

i dont think that the brake lights will light since they run thru the turn signal switch but if im wrong someone will chime in

Yep...

Steve's 100% correct on this...
Circuits 810 (to brake light switch) and 810A (e. flasher switch)
Both originate on the harness side of the connection from the turn signal switch.
Neither will work if the turn signal switch is toasted.

The back up lamp switch probably is on the top side of the transmission. Maybe someone has a picture of the switch for the 3 speed and knows its exact location. The wire is 140 - 140A off the transmission. A guess on the back up lights is someone added/rerouted a wire to the light switch. Otherwise I would look for a ground problem at the rear of the truck.

I think that there are 7 wires - 6 for lights and 1 for the horn in the column.

The brake lights go through the turn signal switch. If the column wires are not connected no brake lights. Wire 10 is for the brakes. The portion directly above the ignition switch is the column. The diagram link
