Speedo problem.

Post by smclaren »

Hi Guys

My speedo has the following symptoms.

- A wild swing. It wont sit on a number, has about a 20mph swing both ways.
- On average, it seems to be about 10-20 mph slower than vehicle speed.
- Noisy as. But I fixed this by greasing up the cable.

Any idea's ?? Cable has been out and looks fine, bottom nylon gear connected to the cable outter looks good.

Help !

Sounds like the lube in the speedo is sticking. This might not be the proper fix, but if it was me I'd squirt a bit of WD in the mechanisms to free it back up.

I would check the speedo gear! In the transmission, I think you can get a new one at any auto parts store. Being where you are though I am not for sure on that. Come to think of it the last one I got was for an 88 F150, I had to order it from Ford. So maybe I am wrong on that. But that is where I would check first.

Steve,

They need a dry lube or they will drag and bounce like you have... They wont take hardly any friction or the cable will flex...

Pull it back apart and clean it out real good and use a Dry Graphite powder lube on it and see how that goes...
Ask at your local parts store for speedometer cable lube, they may/should have some. Here is some http://www.royalenfieldusa.com/speedome ... -6692.html or do a search for "speedometer cable lube"

If it Looks good and Works good then it's ok by me. Everything has its issues from time to time...

The gear could explain why the speedo is not accurate, if someone's installed the proper one in the past, changed rear end gears, or a drastic change in tire size.
It wouldn't explain the jumping around, unless it's stripped or missing a tooth. Wouldn't hurt to pull it and check anyway.

I replaced my speedo cable about three years ago and it self destructed about 5 months later. I took it back and exchanged it and pulled apart the new one and it was hardly lubed at all. I lubed it with bearing grease and reassembled. I had heard about using graphite or teflon, but I used what I had. The speedo was jumpy at low speeds for a while, but it worked itself out. And that may have been the speedo itself that was jumpy, it was a used replacement that I hadn't used before.
