truck doesnt quit, coil boils over, wires on solenoid melted

Post by truck-collector »

I have a 67 F250 with a 460 in it. Recently it started not wanting to shut off right away when I turn off the key. It runs for a few seconds, but power to everything else turns off. Ive smoked three coils-literally. Two aftermarkets that got so hot they boiled out around the caps and the original yellow top which blew a black goo all over. Tonight, when the third coil went, it melted the ground wire from the coil to distributor (mallory unilite) and it fried the small wire on the solenoid closest to the battery. This happens even if I dont have the truck running-just with the ignition key on. Tonight it happened and the truck was completely off. Im thinking its either the solenoid or the ignition switch-or maybe both?
With old trucks you can do what you want. No one will ever ask you "is that a real F100" or "is that a real short box?"

Odds are you are correct, either the ignition switch or the solenoid. We just recently had a thread trouble shooting a similar problem. Take a look at it and see if it gives you any ideas.

but why would it kill the coil too? can it also be a short in the system(s)?

if the voltage to the coil is not switched open (off) the coil will continue to flow current, thus over heating the coil. As the coil heats up resistance goes up, requiring more current and melting wiring.
My first suspect would the ignition switch, and or any relay that may used for your HP ignition system.
