L E D lights

Post by HugYourPlumber »

Ive put l.e.d. lights on just about everything i own except my bump. Anyone else doing this on their bump. Looking for ideas, thinking of making my own. We have an awsome place here that carries lots of led lights for customizing big trucks. Any one have pics of theirs?

I bought some green ones for my dash after seeing someones interior where they used blue LEDs to match the stereo they had just installed. Also I like green gauge backlighting better than the stock white.

Tim,

I haven't done it yet but there's quite a few guys on the site who have.
Here's a little info on them:

i hyave had trouble getting it to work with an L.E.D. on all 4 corners externally. none would flasher or even light with the signals on. except with th emergency flashers on.

i think if you had something that would force a normal draw situation on the circuit you could get all four to flash in there turn signal setup.

other wise the option is led upfront and conventional in back or led in back convebnntional upfront.

perhaps some conventional bulbs hidden somewhere or maybe a transformer designed to cuase the draw on the circuit to be enough to work more than one led to work.

I know how to fix your turn signal flash problem, because i ran into the same problem with my leds lights...swap that old flasher out with an electronic flasher. Oriely's or autozone should have it, will cost about 8 bucks. This fixed my problem right away. Apparently led lights have a low draw of electicity. Lower than is needed to make old mechanical flashers work. Putting an electronic flasher in MAKES it flash. Hope this works for you.

you can also try one of the flashers with a positve lead hooked up to it, in addition to the prongs. you just plug it in to your original plug and hook up the positive wire to constint hot. If that dont work something is not making a good connection or hooked up wrong. These flashers can usually be purchased at a good truck stop.

I think you may be right, there is probably another problem causing this as the symptom caused by LED's is that they are on all the time and don't blink off.

Seattle,

Are you looking for the amperage savings or the safety of a brighter light? If you have the "all four flashing directionals flashing" issue, then I'd just use them in the rear. It's the longest run with the highest potential for a current drop across the wiring.

I put the LEDs in the rear of my '67 while troubleshooting a flaky fuse box. I was trying to minimize the draw through the box, but ended up replacing the whole fuse block anyway.

Also, I would think that a higher percent of fellow motorist would benefit from rear brights, than fronts. Those really thick lens covers really chew up the lumens!

BTW, the 1157 dual filaments replacements are all over ebay for short money. Make sure you don't buy the low LED count per bulb. I thought mine were around 24 or higher.
