Okay, after reading through this section and the "drivetrain" section I concluded that this thing
is my neutral safety switch and that one end goes here
and the other end should go here.
but for obvious reasons it can't. So that means cut and paste.
Now if my reading is correct, the wires on the left
must be for the ignition and I am assuming that the splice is so it can start without the switch. Two of the three wires on the right are for the back up lights. What's the third one for?
On the new switch,
I suppose it is safe to assume that the two red are for the ignition and match the same colored wires on the truck connector. The other two are for the back up lights but that's only two wires and there are three on the truck? How do they connect up? Any help would be appreciated.

You are on the right track
In this picture of the truck connector the 3 wires on the right. The 2 wires (Black wire and the Black -Red striped wire) are connected together in the connector, this Black wire is continuing the power to the washer pump and the turn signal flashers... If you look at this diagram http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... _81-85.jpg at connector (U) you will see wires 140, 950 and 140A these are the wires in question.
On the quick splice... I would think that is what they did but not sure why they didn't just splice the two wire together right there... you might want to follow that single wire they attached in the splice and see where it goes...
Hope this helps.

re: Help with neutral safety switch
Brain overload! Now I remember reading a thread about that wire where a person was having trouble with his turn signals and it came back to that same wire! Thanks for the reminder and the help.
