e-brake light or brake system indicator....

Post by shizal »

:fr: i've got a 72 ford f100 and i'm trying to get the thing registered. but, the won't pass it until i get my e-brake indicator light fixed.

I've replaced the bulb in the display module and also traced (both?) the wires to a gummble of wires that appear to be taped. I'm unsure if it's factory. but, i do notice some electrical work has been done in the past.

my question is whether this thing is a ebrake light or a system warning light and how can i prove it. I'm told i need something in writing. like a owners manual.

i need a good place to start.. i have pulled a 65 ford E-brake light and it looks pretty close(aside from physical deaminations). has two wires coming from it and the one goes to the ebrake and the other has an eye-let type of thing... thanks alot for any help in the matter...

oh ya.... :fr:

That's not connected to the emergency brake in any way. It's a brake system warning light, connected to a differential valve switch in the hydraulic brake system. Read the following thread for info on how it works and how to fix it if it's not working.

Keith,
in a past post I made a similar statement as yours and was told that some of our trucks also came with a parking brake indicator light.
http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... hp?t=33215

All I know is my 67 only has the warning light that you are speaking of and not a parking brake indicator. So maybe this would be a good thread to clear this up, do some of our trucks indeed come from the factory with an additional parking brake indicator?

If the answer is yes, then we need to clarify which light shizal is working on.

ToughOldFord has one on his truck but it is a second light from the brake warning light. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... 752#309752

As for owners manual Keith has one for a 69 in the Factory Lit section... http://www.fordification.com/lit/images ... 6x553].jpg it only shows one for the brake warning light. http://www.fordification.com/lit/69om.htm

If you just need to make the light work for the inspector you need to unhook the wire connector from the brake proportional valve on the left inner fender and ground that wire, it will make the light come on... But hopefully the owners manual listed above will do... Dumb inspectors should know this stuff on there own to be qualified to be an inspector.

That thread was posted when I was on my sabbatical last month. ;) Otherwise, I'd have posted:

The e-brake light pictured by ToughOldFord is definitely NOT a factory item...it's been retrofitted from a different application, probably a Cougar. It's a cool idea for sure...I wouldn't mind having one of those on my truck...but I'd say it's pretty unlikely that shizal's truck has also been similarly retrofitted.

Sorry just seen yours is a 72 so it will have (2) wires on the switch... Ground each one but only one will make the light come on.
Here is the wire diagram for your truck http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... _quick.jpg and it list it as a "Low brake warning indicator" and the switch is "low brake warning switch"

I tend to agree as there is no wire diagrams that show any wiring provisions for one... :2cents:

Nice to have you back BTW

up date... i whent to the inside left fender and sure as day it was there.... the previous owner had dissconnected... maybe, because of the brake lines were bad up front. and so are the wheel cylinders.. because, the light wont shut-off.

i've replaced the lines and am bidding on a new set of four cyl. so i can bleed the brakes...

thanks again for all the help... i still have the 65' e-brake light and switch... maybe i can retro fit... but is above my level... so if one of you guys want to check it out. i could just send to you. if you pay shipping(i'd say from 6 to 10 bucks) i will give to ya....it is just going to sit anyways.

i would think a chiltons truck manual would prove it. where it describes in brakes how to adjust the switch.
