69 Model 99 Alternator/VR Connections???
Went to start Billy the other day and he just couldn't manage to turn over a single revolution. Battery is a month old, new starter and solenoid, new cables...looked at the harness going from the VR to the Alternator and there was a fried wire with all of its strands blue and the PVC tape was split where the now-bare black w/red wire melted through it. The black w/red was connected to the stator terminal on the Alternator and then to the mounting screw at the VR (grounded). I don't think that is the correct way to route that wire. So, I downloaded the wiring diagrams from this site for reference/help with my wiring confusion (3 wires to VR? 4 wires? ugh) and it seems that I cannot find the wiring diagram for the model 99. The Alternator Diagram here is different than what I have, so I am assuming that the diagram I need is for a Model 99. I'm not complaining - just trying to clue you in as to why I am posting without seemingly doing my homework first...
Anyway, to the point. I now have the following:
The Alternator only has the-
Battery Wire Connected
Field Wire Connected
Ground to Base of Voltage Regulator (VR) Connected
NO Stator Wire from Alternator exists
The VR "plug" has-
Battery Wire with Condensor
Field Wire
Stator Wire (this green w/red only runs into the wiring bundle that disappears into the firewal - it does not have a direct connection to the Alternator)
NO IG terminal exists in the "plug" at the VR - it is empty
Question:
Should I spade in a stator wire from the Alternator terminal to the "plug" at the VR?
Sidenote...I have never seen the Ammeter in the dash move. My Chevy's needle "ticks" slightly when the turn signals are on and I'm used to it moving from time-to-time. Not important, but thought I would mention it.

i think the stator is important enough to either spade in a wire from the alt. or go and grab the alternator/front fender harness from same year truck with the same options. for full instrumentation keep it the same for dummy lights ditto.

re: 69 Model 99 Alternator/VR Connections???
I have ordered a full Painless Harness from Summit Racing (yes, I expect more pain than the name implies). I am looking to fix the problem for the short-term and keep the battery charged.
I agree, I think the Stator should be spaded in. I appreciate your support.
Still looking for others to back me up on this - Thunderfoot?

I'm thinking though that the stator splits off another wire to go to the alt.
If you don't mind perhaps a write up with step by step pictures could be used as a technical article for the site.
I don't think anyone else has written one.

Well, that was a mistake!
I spaded in a wire from the stator on the Alternator to the Stator Terminal on the VR Connector and the truck would not turn off! I turned the ingition switch to the off position and then cut the new stator wire and, yes, it stopped the engine. What is up with that?! I could use some advise...

The wiring for charging systems with an ammeter are slightly different then those with just an indicator light. The wiring diagram from Fordification that you are looking at is for the gauge panels with an indicator light.
I have a Ford drawing that may make it clearer for you. Take a look and then if you still have questions we can go from there.

I'm sorry, I didn't catch that you were going to do that, bad jujuRob-a-Billy wrote:Well, that was a mistake!

For a truck with an ammeter, which you have, it sounds, from your description, as if it is wired correct. Though it would help to confirm if you included the color codes on the wires that are connected to your alternator and VR.

I just noticed that Keith does indeed have a diagram for 68's with an ammeter here http://fordification.com/images/schemat ... arging.jpg

I did see that diagram earlier - but I don't have the Field Relay.seattle67 wrote:I just noticed that Keith does indeed have a diagram for 68's with an ammeter here http://fordification.com/images/schemat ... arging.jpg

Super Diagram! I can see why the truck wouldn't want to stop! ANd I can see that the Stator Terminal on the Alternator IS intended to be bare and I see WHY the ground wire fried. What a moron I am.
Thanks for posting - you answered a lot of questions that I couldn't put into words. I'm grateful.
