Rear fuel tank

Has anyone done this on a 4X4? I only ask because LMC lists it as 2wd only. Looking to gain some space in the cab... I am 7 feet tall. I have a 72 F100 LWB 4X4 360 C6. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

There was no optional aux tank on the F250 4x4's due to the location of the transfer case. I don't remember on the F100 but I think You would have to ad a saddle tank or fabricate one inside the frame rail somewhere. You could put one inside the bed as well. Of course these custom tanks would need to be fabricated for a sending unit as well.

I believe the 78-79 Broncos had the narrow frame like the 72 and down. I don't have one here to measure but my brother has a 79.I could maybe get him to measure it.

You can use a rear tank from a dentside highboy or a 73-77 F-350 2wd.

Big broncos are wider in the rear.

I don't see how removing the tank will get you can more legroom. I'm 6'3 and like these trucks because they are one of the few I have enough legroom and knee room to run 3 pedals, but the seat is all the way against the rear cab wall, the tank isn't in the way.

Well first issue is I am 7'-0" and actually with the new seats (see interior thread 2002 f150 60/40 swap) I am doing fine for legroom. Now it is more of an issue of comfort for my fiancee and possible storage room. But the biggest thing would be the missus not feeling safe sitting in front of the gas.

I feel pretty safe with the cab tank myself. I've cut up enough of these trucks to see first hand how tough the cab tanks are. You can fork a tank and lift the entire truck without the tank ripping. They are very, tough tanks.

I figure if I get hit hard enough to puncture that tank I'm going to be dead anyway, but I'll save some money on cremation costs. If the truck rolls, the fuel dumps outside, same as any other tank.

I'd much rather have the cab tank over saddle tanks. Those things are way too easy to pop in a wreck.

The frames changed in 73, but the only two models that didn't change the rear frame width are the F-250 4x4 from 73-77.5 and the F-350 single and dual and super camper special from 73-77 model year.

If you can find either of those models with a rear tank you can fit it in between bumpside rear frame rails. Good luck though. Only the fanciest optioned 4x4's got the rear tanks and most of the F-350's I've seen have had rust in the rear tank from little use over the years.
