The fuel tank sending units used on all Ford products up through 1986 have a resistance range of approximately 8-12 ohms full and 70-73 ohms empty. If you're going an aftermarket gauge, such as one from Autometer, you'll have to use their sending unit. Most aftermarket gauges are not for use with a factory Ford sending unit.

Autometer makes several different fuel gagues to work with your factory sending unit no problem. Go to the site and have a look at all the gauges.

Here is some good reading on automters site about using their gauges with the a factory ford sending unit.

Here is a link to an autometer gauge that will work with your factory sending unit but there are many many more to choose from.

O yea one more thing, the factory instrument housing im useing has been chromed so im wondering if this is going to present a problem when istart triming on it. im planing on useing some tape on the chrome side to try to minimize the damage to the chrome, any thoughts on how anybody thinks this will go.Image

What do you plan on trimming? I assume the oval section out of the center so you can screw the new insrument panel down to your chromed bezel.

I dont think you will have a problem with anything, just use a cutoff wheel so it doesnt have jagged teeth to pull the chrome off the metal. I would also put some kind of rust preventative on the freshly cut area so that it doesnt start to rust. I have seen what rust does to chromed wheels and it aint pretty, the chrome starts to flake off pretty bad.

By the way I sure do like that chrome bezel you have.

just a note...if this is a new gauge, contact autometer. They can re-calibrate the gauge to work with the ford sending unit, usually for minimal cost.
