dash cover
i just ripped the interior out of my 68 and i've been starring at the dash cover for 20 minutes wondering "how the hell does this come off?" a little help would be appreciated. another thing, im not a big fan of headliners. so has anyone ever sheet metaled over the cross members where the headliner should be to get a smooth top in the cab? just wondering if its worth the time and effort.

re: dash cover
There are small studs embedded into the bottom of the pad that extend down through holes in the steel dash, and are then held on with a nut on the bottom side. There are 6 along the front lip and 8 along the back. You remove the nuts from up under the dash, slide the pad forward a little to release the front studs and then pull up and out. In this picture you can see the holes in the steel dash for those studs:

That might look pretty neat. But as someone already mentioned, it might be very loud unless you insulated all up inside.jhndrrus wrote:another thing, im not a big fan of headliners. so has anyone ever sheet metaled over the cross members where the headliner should be to get a smooth top in the cab? just wondering if its worth the time and effort.
are you talking about welding up sheet metal?

re: dash cover
thanks on the dash! what i was thinking for the headliner was to remove it and run a couple more cross members on top and bend sheet metal to the contour of the top and weld it solid. its just for a smooth top look like any other pickup without a headliner. good idea?

Re: re: dash cover
i think thats a sweet idea. maybe an idea for insulation would be that monofoam or foam in a can? i dont know what its called in the states. we used that in our truck and it deadens the sound amazing. we just did the door posts and other areas. you could drill a couple holes big enough for the nozzle to go into and then just pack it solid with it the weld over the holes. just an idea.jhndrrus wrote:thanks on the dash! what i was thinking for the headliner was to remove it and run a couple more cross members on top and bend sheet metal to the contour of the top and weld it solid. its just for a smooth top look like any other pickup without a headliner. good idea?
