on board air

Post by aramil »

how hard would it be to do this? what would i need for it to work, would the ac compressor work for the motor just switch the lines to a holding tank with some pressure release valves and such so it dont fill up tell it explodes? this would be for my 77 not a bump but i would probly use the compresor of my bump.

that helps but could i use the stock ac compresor off my bump, i want to use what i can off the bump to fix up the dent, and anything else worth any thing i want to sell on here before i scrap it.

i like the idea that one of those bronco guys did, he mounted it to the fender and disconnected the belt during driving, i plan on using it to air up the tires and power tools while offroading.

The stock compressor on a bump is a York unit.
There are three different displacements available. You want the compressor with the largest displacement.
This may help:

How ya gonna keep oil in the pump? They rely on circulating oil in the AC system. So how ya gonna keep it lubed?
No oil, it goes POOF! Try again.

That's why you only use the York-style A/C compressors used by AMC, Ford, Volvo, Porsche, IH, and Oldsmobile in the '70's and early '80's. over other style compressors because they (York) have a separate, internal oil reservoir, while other compressors are lubricated by the Freon in the A/C system.

Here is a good article that a guy did and he talks about the oiling and identifying, setup, etc... http://www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/yorkair.html

thunder foot, so what your saying is there is a compressor that basicly has its own oilpan so there wouldnt need to be any lines ran to it? is there a chance they came on our bumps?
i thought the bump ac pump looked like the ones the guys on the bronco site used flyboy but they had theres mounted horizontal
thanks for all the helpfull information you guys. ill post pictures as soon as i attemt to do this.
how would you go about adding oil to the internal resorvoir one, will i have to take it apart or is there a fill tube?

I have built a few of these OBAs using the York 210 compressors and other types of compressors. The Yorks inlets and outlets are marked. They all pump oil. Even the mod that Jedi has done still allows some oil to pass. I do the mod to slow the oil down. I also use mineral oil in mine about 3 to 4 oz. Also a inline water/oil seperator. You will get water in the system. The little bit of oil that does pass is good for air tools but will distroy ARB lockers. It also gets inside the tires. Its not enough to worry about. The Yorks are fast when the RPMs are up, make sure you run a pressure switch and a saftey valve. You can get the Yorks off 70 and 80 Ford pickup along with the brackets and pulleys. The tags are different, they don't say York. You will have to pull the pulley off to figure out what CFM it is. They came in 6, 8 and 10cfm builds. Almost all are 8 & 10cfm. Valvo are a sure bet, but Ford used the better of the fittings making them easier to adapt other fitting onto them. Have fun

Yes our bumps had them, my 68 parts truck has one on it that I have been thinking about doing this with it for my Highboy. (it's down a ways on the project priority list though)

They don’t have a pan it's just the case. Here is a service manual on them, http://www.164club.se/service/york.pdf they have a plug on two sides for checking and filling the oil (see document page 7). These can be mounted on there side or straight up, when mounting on there side they suggest mounting the inlet (suction) side up.

I haven't done this conversion myself yet, but I look forward to what you do and looks like Heep70 can help out as he has done it!

I done this 30 yr's or so ago. Theres a lube hole in the sump on the "YORK". A 22 bullet fits it perfect. Find the hole
and pound the bullet in. Works. Gotta keep the compressor full, so ck. it when you use it. Otherwise they they toss
a con rod. Make a filter for the inlet so it don't suck up dirt. Makes a pretty good setup! Get a press. switch and
hook it to the clutch pulley. Jake

I'll toss this out there too. The "York" makes an exellant vac. pump too. If you need to pump down a refrigertation
unit, plum to the inlet. It will pull 30" of vac. real quick.
