Gas pedal firewall mount; are parts available to rebuild?

Post by robroy »

'Evening,

When I grab my gas pedal I can wiggle it from side to side quite a bit. Removing part of the firewall cover yielded this doodad:

Here's how it looks from the outside of the firewall:

It was clear that the hinge in the middle of the doodad was pretty worn out.

Does anybody know if parts are available to rebuild this assembly? I haven't seen this in any catalog before.

Thanks very much!

I know on my old 68 the mount itself where the three bolts are cracked and broke in half, I removed it and took it to a local welder to repair, It's been so long but it might just be a rubber bushing in there that you could probably find in a parts store somewhere. Not much help but :hmm: good luck, and hope everything works out for you.

Hey 390F100, thanks! So far I've combed through the Dennis Carpenter and NPD catalogs with no success regarding this part.

Since it's moderately worn and still functional I probably won't remove it unless I can buy parts that will make the rebuild pretty quick and easy. Otherwise I'll save it for another day.

Thanks for posting with your story!

Hey Robroy,

don't forget to keep us updated on your progress on your bump. I know with mine it's hard to see the future but eventually it will all come together. Good luck...

Unfortunately there is not any easy way to rebuild these… It is assembled while it is a straight shaft and then bent to the shape afterwards, so no easy way to get it apart… below are pictures of the one out of my 69 and one out of a 79 that I converted to on my Highboy.
I haven't seen any replacements for it, so you would just have to find a better used one then what you got...

Sorry to change the subject, but you might want to give that wire some attention Robroy!

I think I might have a good one if you need it. It is from a 70 with a 302. Give me a PM if you need it.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! What began as a simple summer project of swapping the engine out in my truck has grown in to a serious rebuild, including refinishing the frame (from the cab forward), brakes, suspension, steering, and so on. My goal is to have #50 on the road before Thanksgiving. My original goal was by Halloween but that's definitely not happening anymore!

Hi Shayne, Dan and Josh, thanks for the replies!

Shayne, it's good to know that there aren't any replacement parts available for these. I'm surprised that I managed to employ a hint of wisdom and left it intact until finding out whether or not I could rebuild it! Although I wasn't wise enough to leave the inside firewall cover unharmed. That's a neat photo of your assemblies by the way.

Dan, yeah that wire is looking pretty sorry! :) Some day I'll put in a whole new harness, but not at the moment. Maybe I'll check that wire out and put some new electrical tape on it.

Josh, thanks for the offer on your unit from your '70 with the 302. I think my assembly isn't worn out quite enough for me to consider swapping it for another used unit, and I have a '67 parts truck that I can scavenge first. But thanks for the offer and I'll keep it in mind. If your assembly is easy to grab and inspect, I'd be curious to know if there's any play in it. Like when you grab the shaft in one hand and the mount in the other, and wiggle it around, does it give at all?

Thanks again folks!

I checked that pedal out. I grabbed the mount and tried to move the pedal arm. Surprisingly, there seems to be no play at all. The only thing at all was a little surface rust along the pedal arm. I believe it was the best piece on the whole truck. I may have to check my 72 and see if it has play.

Hey Josh that sounds like a good pedal! Do you happen to know if the pedal is different for different engine choices?

Thanks!

Only difference I know of is between a 6 and 8 cylinder. All v8 pedals ar the same. Mine is a v8 pedal.
