Im planning on making my own, and possibly experimenting with fiberglass and then covering it the same carpet as on the floor.

Here's mine, stuffed between seats from a mid 80's Crown Vic.

I used scrap lumber, sanded it smoothe, and covered with polyurethane.

It has two cup holders and the door is held on with a piano hinge. The shield for the gas tank is just more of the same wood. I put velcro on it to secure it to the truck just above the tank, to keep it from rattling. It rests on the floor at the bottom.

Good luck.

That gas tank cover idea is a good one! I dig it! Never thought about doing that until now...

Console options

Post by mike68merc »

I'm contemplating using the stock console from a 79 Bronco. I shimmed it a little in the front so it sat level. It has a recessed area under the leading edge that is not noticeable, but unnecessary in our trucks. It screws to the floor with 4 screws & BIG washers. Fits Nicely between the seats, with a good usable amount of storage, & 2 cup holders!....Though the cup holders are kind of shallow & I'd probably have my drink spilled on the first turn...
I believe these were used in Full size broncos well into the mid 80's...? I've seen them in many colors; Red, Blue, Grey, Black, Tan. Locks with a FORD key. I removed the lock mechanism & will take it to a locksmith to see if he can key it to match the lock on the glove box door. These consoles are textured plastic & kind of resemble an IGLOO ice chest...If I DO use it, I will have it wrapped in Vinyl (or something) by the upholsterer to make it blend with the interior better.
I'm asking for trouble with this last bit, but I also found a console from an '80's DODGE Ramcharger. Looks VERY similar but with a few small differences; Cup holders slightly deeper, console slightly wider (still fits fit nicely), textured a little finer...but keyed as a MOPAR, so key's won't match.
Any way, just an idea.

Nope. Got em locally (Portland, OR) last year from a Gentleman (I use that term loosely!) who deals in used truck parts & specializes in our era of trucks. My truck came with buckets, but they were TRASHED! These came complete with bases & are in pretty nice shape... I replaced my ratty seats & bases with these....(then Craigslist-ed the junk ones for more than I paid for these.)
However they seem to be a little uncomfortable!?! I mocked up the interior when the truck was being disassembled. I sat in them for 5-10 minutes pretending to be Speed Racer, but haven't DRIVEN in them yet. My Girlfriend HATES them!! But I want to finish the truck & try them out for a wile. If they are uncomfortable, I'll find something else.....So the Jury is still out.

A funny thing...He said these were being used in the REAR seat section of a CREW CAB! He said the truck had TWO SETS of bucket seats & it looked to be FACTORY ORIGINAL....The factory reinforcements were under the cab.

****NOTE he sold me the seats from the rear, but used the mounting brackets from the front seats that were a little ratty. He said he sold the rear seat brackets for a small fortune.
I've never seen (or even heard of) such a thing. He seems to be a no BS kind of guy, so I trust he's not telling any fishing stories.
Just thought I'd share that & see what y'all thought...?

Well I haven't heard of that either :? they do look good though, I just got a set so I am hoping there not uncomfortable. I am still overseas so I haven't even got to sit in mine, but I am hoping they change the angle that I sit, so that my long legs aren't so uncomfortable driving down the road. Not that I am a giant guy but I am 5' 11" and 200 lbs and the angle really hurts the gas pedal leg (On Long Trips). So that is why I want to try the buckets! I think I am going to build my own center console, and cover it with Diamand Plate Aluminum, and trim the interior with that stuff as well. All in time though all I can do is sit here on my thoughts at the moment.
