I know this is a little (OK maybe alot ) off topic, but it is a Ford and it is a Ranger.
I have a 99 Ranger with the 3.0 V6 Volcan that has 130,000 miles on it. The motor runs like it is in desperate need of a timing adjustment. Only thing is, it has electronic ignition. What direction should I go first? I realy like the truck but this problem is starting to get under my skin. I think because I am clueless to the diagnosis.
I've tried asking over on ranger-forums.com but haven't gotten a usefull answer as of yet, so I knew I could turn to my faithful buds here!
Hopefully someone can help me out.

Is it giving any codes, check engine light on?
Have you given it a tune up lately, plugs, wires, etc?
What symptoms are you having? Is it missing, running rough, or just kind of doesn't have any get up and go?

If it Looks good and Works good then it's ok by me. Everything has its issues from time to time...

There is no check engine light on, but I don't belive there is one. I never noticed one at start up.
It runs sort of rough, sometimes. Just a slight "miss fire" now and then. I should just replace the plugs a wires even though the are suposedly new. (according to the PO). And it does seem a little more sluggish than I think it should. I know it"s only a 3.0 but it should have a little more "umf".

my friend has a ranger with the same engine and a 5pseed manual. The truck does have some get up and go.
I sugest taking the truck to the local parts house... i believe auto zone or most part houses will run a scan tool on your vehicle for free. There should be a check engine light... yours is probally burnt out or the PO took the blub out cause they couldnt get it to shut off. Seen way to much of that lately with the vehicles that have come into the school.
Some how i always get these vehicles...

WOOOT!! i passed my mechanics classes. Now working as a mechanic and waiting to go for my ASE certifications.
It's got to have one somewhere... all vehicles after 96 have odb-II... I know that AutoZone will do the read for free; I'm sure some other will too. I would start there first.

look under the dash on the drivers side there will be a black or grey colored trapizoid looking thing

The check engine light must be burned out because it absolutly doesn't come on. I really want to pick up a repair manual for this truck, but my wife keeps telling me that Christmas is coming and she needs gift ideas.

You should be able to see where the check engine light is by looking closely at the instrument panel, most of the time you can read the lamps without them being iluminated. It absolutely should have one and it should "bulb check" when the key is turned on for a a second or two.
Don't overlook the simple stuff already mentioned (plugs, wires....) and don't buy into any of the fancy plugs, just get whatever the OEM plug is. You would be amazed at how many problems an incorrect plug will cause in a modern vehicle.

It seems the check engine light is burned out. I took it to Advanced and the code read bad EGR flow. So I guess I'll be starting there. Hopefully that will fix my problem.
Would a restricted EGR flow make the timing be off?
