Turn Signal Flashing Question
I have a question regarding how fast the turn signals flash. They are the slowest flashing turn signals I've ever seen. Is his normal for the year truck?
The battery is new and they don't change regardless of the RPM (I thought maybe it was due to a low battery at first).
Is there a flasher relay that could cause this?

Re: Turn Signal Flashing Question
hmm mine flash at the same speed as my 92 silveradeo. THou when you first turn them on they go really really fast for a sec.
Might try replacing the turn signal canaster. There are two of them i believe

I don't really care about brands Chevy Ford Dodge ...as long as it doesn't sound like two old dudes farting in a coffee can.

Re: Turn Signal Flashing Question
the flasher relay is thermally activated which is related to the amp draw. If the stock unit was replaced with a heavy duty unit, i.e. for towing, then it will be slow. Replace with a standard unit will make the lights "normal." If you have LED lights, you need a relay built for the LED.

Re: Turn Signal Flashing Question
Thanks guys for the input. This is a camper special so maybe it was replaced with a heavy duty. Do you know where the relay is located?

Re: Turn Signal Flashing Question
I have had good luck using the electronic flashers from NAPA. They cost a bit more than the standard type but they flash at a constant rate regardless of load and they seem to last forever. I don't know if they work with the LED type lights.

I believe it is on the instrument panel. "circle 2" on the schematic.

Re: Turn Signal Flashing Question
Hey Jkittle,
If the flasher unit has been replaced, it probably is just hanging loose behind the dash.
The orginal ones had a plastic nub on the top that plugged into a hole on the instrument panel...
To the best of my knowledge, those aren't available anymore.
I had problems with my flashers for years until I discovered the second flasher unit and replaced it. (I replaced both at the same time).
After that I haven't had probems with it...except for one rear tail light, and that was 'cause of a bad ground.
The second flasher unit looks just like the 1st one just a small silver cylinder about the diameter of a quarter.
The second one should be somewhere around the middle of the dash... you might have to remove the glove box or radio to get to it, unless you're adapt to crawin' upunder the dash... I'm not.

Re: Turn Signal Flashing Question
The 2nd flasher unit is used for the emergency flashers and should be the same as the turn signal unit. If it is malfunctioning, it could cause problems in the operation of the turn signals since the circuits are connected.
I like the idea of the solid unit from NAPA but have not had a reason to try one.

Re: Turn Signal Flashing Question
"552" is the flasher #. I got "LED" bulbs without relays. They seem to work pretty good. The 552HD flasher works
just fine too. It's just made to carry more bulbs without burning out. The thing is, they changed the pin positions
in the plug on the column over the years. You have to use two schematics and cross reference them. Then it's a
piece of cake! Jake
