Installed new door weatherstrip. Now door is hard to shut.

Post by theogre5150 »

I just installed some new weatherstrip for my doors. I have not got all of it on yet but I noticed that it is now hard to close my door all of the way. Also, when I go to open the door, it acts like it is SUPER spring loaded and pops open. My question is, is there an adjustment somewhere on the door to allow for the new weatherstrip?

Probably not if the outside front and rear edges line up with the cab. May just take a while for the seals to relax.

This is normal for new weatherstripping. It will take a little time for the new rubber to 'settle in.'

a buddy of mine just did this, 3 times! he kept ordering different kits because they didnt fit right, like your experiencing. he finally got the right ones and they fit perfect. he was ordering the right ones for his truck, apparently there are a few suppliers that sell the wrong ones. i will call him later and find out which ones he got. he had to call a bunch of different people to find out what was going on. he was pissed when he couldnt return the others once he found this out! :x

I've replaced weather stripping on 2 old fords, one set from LMC and the other from JC Whitney. They both were hard to shut for a few months but eventually worked out just fine. I liked the JC Whitney ones better. What I did was adjusted the door stricker out just a hair so there was still pressure on them but the doors would close good, and then every week or so adjust the striker back in little by little until the body lined up again.

Thanks for all of the responses on this. I figured that over time that the door would compress the seals. I hope.

i heard that with all new seals if you leave the window up the doors won't close right unless you roll the window down a hair. until the seal breaks in.

proably different cuase than your problem?

I don't want to give em a heart-attack. That is what would happen if I answered the door in the buff. Heck it almost scares me to death when I step out of the shower and look in the mirror.~Mancar1~

That's only with vehicle doors without a full window frame. That's not an issue with these trucks, since the glass weatherstripping have nothing to do with the door closing.

I adjusted the striker bolt. As of today, they still have not compressed.

You should pick up the new Hot Rod mag. The one that has 101 tips in it. I borrowed it from a friend today and it has a solution for this problem in it. I don't remember the details or have the mag with me so I wont give you bad info.

Don't forget, your compairing almost 40 year old weather stripping to brand new. Mine is still a little tight after almost 2 years, but its a nice air tight seal. I like the nice tight feel. :2cents:
