Tail Lights Still Staying On

Post by FordTruck »

My tail lights wouldn't go off. The second I plug in the plug under the hood the lights come on and wouldn't go off. All the wires behind the light sockets are all hooked up but could it be my light switch or what? I just got my truck drivable and need lights so people wouldn't hit me

Have you checked the brake light switch? It may be worn out and not turning off. If that isn't it, I'd say you got a short.

Check the ground at the tail light on both sides. Then check the bulbs, clean the contacts and use some dielectric grease putting the assemblies back together. You may want to get some different tail light bulbs and try them also. Let us know what happens.

You've unplugged the brake light switch and the lights stay on? Sounds like a previous owner has done some wire hacking. One common problem area is previous owners who didn't know what they were doing modifying the wiring back by the taillights trying to install a trailer connector. How does that wiring look? Has it been tampered with?

And let's clarify: Is it the brakelights or the taillights that are staying on?

I couldn't find any hack wiring under the dash and under the bed looks fine. I think it may have someting to do with the light switch because the front lights will also do the same if I put bulbs in them. I checked the gronds behind the tail lights and they're fine. From what my mom says nothing changes when the brake pedal is pushed.

Tail Lights Still Staying On

Post by FordTruck »

Ok today I went through and took every fuse out one by one and the tail lights didn't go off. I'm gonna be putting a 67 bed on it but I think I'm gonna have to use the 70's bed wiring. So I want to figure it out before I put another bed on. So anyone have any ideas on the problem?

dont the brake lights go through the turn signal switch in the column? that could be were the problem is. or at the bottom of the column.where the wires come out .

Try unplugging the light switch, the marker/tail lights are not fused so pulling the fuses wont turn them off. If you they go out after unplugging the light switch then either the switch is bad or some wires there are shorted or miswired. :2cents:

you have some wires crossed someplace. you are going to have to just trace them down. the only other thing i can think of is the front turn signal bulbs sockets. one of the bulbs might be crossing and touching both terminals and feeding back some how. i do remember someone having that problem. they replaced the bulb and thier problem went away.

check the back of the fuse box. maybe something has broken off and is feeding back through the brake lights.
