It doesn't come off. You have to pull the whole nob and rod out of the switch. On the switch body there is a place you will need to push and it will pull out. I cant exactly remember where to push. Some one will pipe in with the specifics. Also use the search function. This subject has been discussed several times.
Good luck

Re: head light switch knob removel
I recently replaced all mine with some billet knobs and had the same question before I started. The plastic knob is molded directly on to the metal shaft which has a slight bump near the end to give the plastic something to hang on to. I just used some vice grips to squeeze the knob and worked around it until it was smashed out of shape and loosened up enough to come off the shaft. You can then take a dremel and grind/round off the shaft so a billet knob will slip on.

to get the whole knob out and save it for further use or sale. you reach up under the dash on top of the headlight switch you will find a little button, push down on that knob to release the internal catch and the rod and knob will come off in one piece. to reinstall you may have to push the knob in and hold the button too. sometimes they just wont go back in and stay latched.

you forgot to mention while doing this, the truck must be facing east, 1/2 hour before sundown. Preferably in a month that has an "R " in itfordman wrote:to get the whole knob out and save it for further use or sale. you reach up under the dash on top of the headlight switch you will find a little button, push down on that knob to release the internal catch and the rod and knob will come off in one piece. to reinstall you may have to push the knob in and hold the button too. sometimes they just wont go back in and stay latched.
