Pics of tachs installed
Well I finally put a tach in papabug tonight. After driving it since 1994 with no tach, I figured what the heck. Its a old Sun mini tach that I had in my stash. Works great & lights up very nice, but im not too thrilled with how it looks in general. Im wanting one of the old school autometer 50th anniversary tachs, but at $125 bucks, im going to have to live with this one for now.
Any of you guys got pics of your tachs installed?
Thanks in advance!
Matt.

LOL!! Didnt think you would be interested! Stand by one.......
Here is the tach. Not big on the white face, but it was a free-bee so I cant complain.
My wal-mart under dash gauges. I helped my dad install these in 1994 & they still work like a charm. No leaks on the oil side either!
The inside. Excuse the dust, he has been in storage for the last 5 years..... Also I havent had time to repaint the colum since I put on the new shift cuff. & the cluster makes me want to gag. Im looking forward to my new one from DC.

Cool looks good!
Anyone make an "a pillar" guage pod for our trucks? I dont think anyone makes one commercially, but I am good friends with the local stereo shop authority (they just put A video system for the Daughter in our Denali) and they can fiberglass one up.
I would like to see one.

Re: Pics of tachs installed
Whittled this out of some scrap EMT one evening at work. The Tach is from an old bluebird bus, eBay for $9. The cap on the housing was beaten out of a peice of flat 16 ga scrap with a ball peen hammer and a pile of rags, took about a half hour. Welded the cap together from the inside and then sanded it in the lathe. Same for the pillar, just clamped it around a 1" chunk of scrap in the mill and cut the housing radius and the column peice radius. It's all welded from the inside and uses the column clamp to hold the tach to the column.
I thought about doing the pillar as well, just need more time to play and less to work.

Very nice work Ranchero50!! Looks slick! I would pay top dollar for a piece like that. If you ever get in the mood to mass produce them, let me know & i'll be the first in line.
That tach looks cool as well. Now im going to have to start looking for an old blue bird bus(s). Looks very correct for these trucks.

Re: Pics of tachs installed
Thanks for the props. The tach only goes to 4k, but then so did the 360 that was in front of it. It'll be perfect for the diesel. I've thought a couple times about doing a pillar mount, using a salvaged A pillar from another cab and welding the cup and post on similiar to the column job. I just haven't taken the time to see how the EMT fits a 2 1/16" gauge.
I was thinking Pyro and Boost on mine with maybe water temp and oil pressure.
One thing I did was just clear coat the bare parts to keep the brushed look.

Here is a Westach I have in my '72, I like the look quite well. But I do need to get a brighter light for it. It is held on with a zip tie, true hillbilly style

Re: Pics of tachs installed
Jason, thats the kind I am looking for. The old sweep style. Autometer has one but its expensive.
Looked on ebay today & not much to choose from. A bunch of stuart warner stuff, but the price on the old SW gauges are un-real!

Re: Pics of tachs installed
I love it, it was given to me years ago by my brother or a friend(can't remember) because it sweeps slow and wouldn't have worked in their application. But since the truck isn't a race vehicle it works great. I checked their website, but I ain't to good at navigating unfamiliar sites. I think they run around $115. They have a lot of stuff for ultralights and planes on there, and seem to make a few different styles.

Here's mine. Moon eyes are so cool that I am, by association, just that much cooler myself.

Re: Pics of tachs installed
Jamie, that is awesome! You should make those and sell them. They look so much better than the hose clamp most of us have on ours. That blue bird tachometer looks like the same size as most of the aftermarket ones.
