I have always had an after market Gauge... I can tell when it is charging and when it is not...

Something wrong. Volts are really better than amps because of you see the Volts drop you know you are in trouble. If the Ammeter swings left that just means for now you are drawing more than you are putting in. A 65amp alternator does not put out 65 amps unless it is revved up. Crawling across the desert at 30 mph with 8 monster lights and the tunes blasting really eats current. At low RPM alternators are down on their power curve. When I 3G my truck with a 130 Amp one the low RPM that I plan on running my truck at will only give me 100 amps at 4000.
