Re: fuel tank swap.(pics)
Nice work td,I would think one would want to have just a little bit of the tank to show so when someone ask about it you would have a reason to show and tell about your hard work.I have the same tank on the shelf for "Old Blue" and have really enjoyed your pics.I too look forward to seeing some pics of the rear to see if it shows.I can relate to the "Holding back" of the toy funds as I found out today that my job of eight years will get moved to another state next year.Bummmmmmmer!Anyways, nice work,I love it! OK,
Confusion time....
Your tank appears to be lower than it needs to be. You have 2 filler neck gaskets and a spacer. Why not raise the tank and elimate the spacer and second gasket? Wouldn't that also hide the tank behind the bumper even better?
just wondering... everything else looks good.
regards,
eric

i appreciate your observation, i'll explain why i decided to mount it this way. if you'll look closely in the pic below you'll see that the 3rd set (from the front) of bed bolts drop down right on top of the tank, if the tank were on the top frame lip as you suggest these bolts would have to be left out. plus i was worried that the cross support those bolts went through would rest to closely to the tank. i didn't use two filler gaskets, that the one that came with the tank cut in half. i did this to compensate for the small amount of angel the tank neck had in relation to the flat bed floor. see how i straightened some of the angel out by clamping the gasket at an uneven angel. i later clamped the top filler opening and cap in the position its in to help even more. if i hadn't done this the cap would have came through the bed floor at a lot steeper of an angel
than it is in the pic.

Re: fuel tank swap.(pics)
I understand, but I guess it is just a difference of what you are saying and how I understand it.
I was not suggesting that you mount the tank on top of the bed rails, as I understand the issue there.
But...
With what looks to be a great amount of skill you have done some very nice work, so I am sure you have thought this out.... I just am not seeing it in my sleep-deprived head...
Cut the bed bolts .. they are too long anyway.
Cut some new supports for the tank that will fit on the sides of the frame that lift the tank up so that it sits 1/2" below the frame rail (it seems this would give you 3" or so additional clearance).
For the filler neck, just V notch it and weld it back up... that way you can ensure a perfect sealing angle (and eliminate potential points of failure).
As I said, I haven't done this, and I am only working off what I understand... I really am not trying to get you to change your design, just get a better understanding of why you did what you did. I present my thoughts to hopefully allow you to undersatnd my perspective and allow you to address my points so that I may better understand... I always want to learn why people make the choices, and a point/counterpoint discussion seems to be how I learn best.
An additional issue is that I don't really understand your design criteria, so I am certain there are things I am overlooking.
Thanks, and hopefully I haven't offeneded you too much.
Regards,
Eric

Hey td,what are some of the details of running the sending unit wire?Where did you come through the cab to make the wires go to the rear?I know you probably had to lengthen them, how did you lengthen them?TIA,Calvin
