fuel gauge wiring (cs) with aux tank

Post by mouse »

I have a 71 f250 sc cs with the aux tank, only my fuel gauge dose not work so I am going though test but I have no clue to where the wires on the gauge tank switch go, there is 6 wires on it 1 orange, 2 green, and 3 black. I have about a half a tank and the sending unit is giving me 24 ohms

pulled a cheek on the gauge its self with 33ohm and 47ohm resister from the negative side to ground and it did nothing, the positive side has a voltage bounce of 1.7/2.3 to 4.8 volts. is ther a way to repair the gauge

The VR puts out 5 volts avg. The Ford manuals say use 10 ohm 5 Watt for high and 75 ohm 1 watt for low.

Replacement is the only way.

all I had sitting around that I could find at the time was a 2 watt 47 ohm and 33 ohm, I had a 10 ohm 10 watt for testing alternators that I can't find right now

That is not much of a difference in swing range. only 21.5 % of total so the gauge would not move much at all.

The tank sensor is reading about 3/4 a tank.

Take a reading of the tank sender 10 ohms to ground when full and 75 when empty. If that is okay the gauge should be out of tune. Because if it moves at all it is not broken but severally out of adjustment. If broken it falls to zero unless the return spring also fails.
