67 won't turn off with key
I sure could use some knowledge here. Background - I have a 1967 F100 with a rebuilt 351W (non-EFI). Starts and runs fine, but will not turn off with key. If I remove the green-red (I think those are the colors) wire from the regulator, I can start and turn off with switch, but the alt does not charge the battery. Any thoughts on why I cannot turn off with the switch when everything is hooked up? All parts (ignition switch, regulator, solenoid, etc) worked fine with the original 352 that was in it.
I have combed through the threads on here and cannot seem to find one with the same issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Chad

This is a long shot, but see if the plug and socket from the coil is corroded. It's located on the firewall to the left of the carb linkage. Unplug it and spray some WD40 or cleaner in it. Then plug it back together and try it.

that is new wiring. I have traced all of the wiring and can find nothing bad/grounded/etc. Would a bad solenoid or regulator cause this and if so, any ideas on how to check them?
Thanks again!

mine did this twice when i first fired the new engine, scared me to death! but i'd turn the ignition off and on a couple times and it 'd finally kill it. after that it never has happened again.

Maybe the solonid? One post bypasses the resistor wire to the coil for starting only. I guess if it was stuck in the closed position it would let the engine keep running. It is only a momentary contact for starting, sending 12V to the points. Turn the key off and pull both of the small wires off the solonid. if it stops replace the solonid.clbrockman wrote:that is new wiring. Re: 67 won't turn off with key
The “Green / Red stripped wire” on the Voltage Regulator is the exciter wire from the ignition switch, once the alternator starts charging this wire gets power back fed from the Voltage regulator. So if the Ignition switch contacts are bad and not disengaging in the off position it could be your problem… The only other thing would be if this wire under the dash as it turns to “Black / Green Stripped wire” to the ignition switch, has shorted to the ignition coil wire “Pink” wire somewhere…
If you have on Ohm meter you can test this out, with the truck off unhook the Green / Red stripped wire from the voltage regulator and the wire from the (+) side of the coil and see if it is connected or open. If it is connected (it should NOT be) then it is one of the problems I mentioned above, unplug the Ignition switch (UNHOOK the BATTERY first) and then see if the connection is broken from the (+) coil wire to the voltage regulator. If so then your ignition switch is the problem, if not then something is miss-wired somewhere or wires are shorted together… If you look at this diagram http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... gauges.jpg all you would have to unhook from the ignition switch is the wires on the back of the connector on the stud, wires #297 & #98... #98 is the exciter wire (Black / Green) that turns into the (Green / Red) wire to the voltage regulator.
HTH…

Just follow the wiring below. This will stop your engine if all else fails !

Re: 67 won't turn off with key
As Thunderfoot said the most likely cause is a bad ignition switch. The reason it dies when the exciter wire is removed the the regulation for the Alternator is lost and the alternator ramps up current and stall the engine.
The 67 through late 70s ignitions switches had a recall on them. They would stay on and drain the battery or as the recall states they would get the under dash wiring so hot they would cause a cab fire.
