Salvage yard treasures.

Post by bjde0b »

I went to a local salvage yard yesterday to see what kind of treasures I could find. I was looking for a windshield washer reservoir, coolant overflow reservoir, a sway bar, defrost vents, power brakes booster, power steering pump and anything else I could find.

I came away with a radio, original gear shift knob, defrost vents, glovebox, power brakes booster, power steering pump, sway bar from a dent 250 and a shifter boot.

I don't know if the radio is from a bump or a dent, check it out and let me know what you think.http://www.bjandkristen.com/myf100/pict ... IM0659.jpg I have a Highliner that I purchased from LMC for my CD player. A cover plate came with it for the stock radio. I want to have both. I am not sure if I can wire both to the same speakers without causing problems. I am an engineer by trade and I am suprised I have never pondered wiring two recievers to one set of speakers before. Maybe I will try it in my house first.

The gear shift knob looks good. I need to verify that reverse is in the same position. I might try to paint the letters white with a small white pen or something. I think someone damaged the defrost vents under the re-upholstered dash pad. I am wanting to replace the dashpad or completely remove it and fill some holes. I also found a glovebox that is in excellent condition. There is minimal sag or fraying. When I rebuilt this truck eleven years ago I hunted all over salvage yards for a good one and the one I happened on yesterday is in much better shape. I know I can buy one for $15 from LMC, but now I don't need to.

The power brakes booster was in the best shape of the four bumps I saw, but I don't know if it works. My power steering pump squeels and the cooling fins are not fixed to anything. I found a great looking power steering pump with a good bracket on a 302 that I am going to use.

You can check out all the pictures on my website at http://www.bjandkristen.com/myf100/phot ... treasures/

I am hoping I can sell the sway bar to someone somewhere because it does not appear to work.

Good score of parts! The radio is from a dent but should fit in the bump ok.

Nice!! I wish I could score parts like that at our local salvage. The only bumps left in the yards around here are either stripped all the way down to the frame or crushed..... :pout:

Yeah I paid $50 for all of it. There was one truck that I was told I could not take anything off of. It had a perfect firewall cover. It was faded but all the stitching was good. There was 4 other bumps for me to scavange. I also bought a 17 piece Craftsman 1/2 drive at a pawn shop the same day. It was mint.

I used to spend hours walking the salvage yard here in Missouri when I was in high school hunting for parts. When I get back to Houston, TX I am going to go to Salvage Row on Airline Dr. and see what I can find.

What are some of the other great finds people have had? I want a tailgate for a stepside. Betcha I never find that one.

One other question. The rubber shift boot is in good shape but needs a good cleaning. What is the best method anyone knows of for cleaning rubber without degrading it?

Good score!!
I got lucky I found a small but good junkyard it's olny got two bumps and a few dents and alot of old cars. All that for $50 that ain't bad most people who have those kind of places think there stuff is too good for them to sell or if they do they milk you. Also your lucky if you find one that they'll let you go roam around and look at stuff most they just want to go get the stuff for you. At least that's been my expirences but this guy I go to is real reaisonable and he dosen't really care I just tell him going back to get some stuff off of one of those old trucks and he dosen't ask for what he just goes yeah go a head. I've gotten grille inserts for $5 bucks and a whole wiring harness for $10  that's just a few things I've bought and the most I've spent is $30 and that was for a BUNCH of stuff.

Was a good discussion on these FM radios here http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... io#p333927 The balance lever under the push buttons and the style of the numbers is different for the Dent Side ones, plus the wiring is different...

That shifter knob is for a T18 transmission. If it's not the right one, I have a spare washer fluid reservoir. Maybe we could work something out?

Yeah, my shifter goes down and right for the reverse. PM me and let me know what you had in mind for the a trade. Fordman offered to sell me one at a good price, but maybe a trade would help the both of us.

I got some new treasures the other day. A stock radio, steering column, seat, stepside tailights, stock jack and bracket and an instrument gauge panel. Paid $40, so I am fairly pleased.

I want the big old steering wheel without paying $200 to LMC. Has anyone ever successfully filled the cracks on the steering wheel like the cracks shown below.

BJ, one suggestion is to carefully remove a couple hog rings from the bottom of that seat and feel up under the naugahyde cover to see if the original seat is still ok. I have a perfect '69 black comfortweave seat that I pulled out of a junked 16' boxtruck (ex Uhaul?) that had that cover on it. Looked just like yours, only much worse on the outside. I had some pics up on here last year, but I can't find them now.
