I need a quick speaker education
This is related to my headliner post in "Interior" but it's audio specific so I thought I'd post here.
I've traced and cut out my headliner and today picked up the smalles speaker I could find to try out in the headliner when I get around to installing it.
Here's my questions:
1. Can someone tell me the difference between single cone and dual cone speakers (besides the second cone..whatever that is)?
2. More importantly, I have a feeling that when I install it, the magnet will be attached to the metal roof of the cab. Is it OK to slip a piece of some thin insulating board between the magnet and the roof?
3. Should I just spring for the dual cone replacement at NPD that will fit under the dash? By the time I'm done with 2 speakers, the wiring, and the hassle the money will probably be about the same?
Thanks for any help

1. sound is better with a dual cone
2. yes that will work fine you do want the magnet to attach itself to the roof so it doesn't sag or fall down. but a thin piece of foam will be ok between them i would think.
3. i dk. i havent seen what they have for sale.

Re: I need a quick speaker education
In general,
the smaller the diameter- the less bass is produced.
the shallower the speaker the less bass is produced.
a two cone speaker usually has one for high frequencys ( smaller one ) and one for mid & low frequencies.
a three cone speaker has one for each.
the smaller the diameter the less volume it will handle.
the weaker magnet the less clear the sound will be.
freequency response, and amount of volume it can handle are related to the price.
This is just in general about speakers.

I would go with a dual cone setup, personally. It will produce a better sound. Whatever you do, dont allow the magnet to directly touch the metal roof. This will cause interference and ultamately ruin the speakers and or the head unit.

Re: I need a quick speaker education
Thanks fordman, no idea.
It already works better than it ever has since I've had it. The PO had some goofy wiring to the speakers and I could only ever get 1 station so I just left it off.
Now I get all stations and listen enough to hear the hiss. If I can find another radio to test it with, I'll hook power to it and see what happens.
I don't suppose one of those resistor, condenser thingys would filter out some of that?
Thanks

Re: I need a quick speaker education
the condensor in the dist filters out the engine noise.

Re: I need a quick speaker education
What if I replaced the points with a pertronix?
I can't remember if that included taking the condenser out or not - I'll check when I get home.
Thanks

Re: I need a quick speaker education
Does it only hiss with the engine running or is it doing it with the engine off??? If it is only with the engine running then it could be the noise filter for the Alternator or some engines also had one on the coil. The one in the distributor is for the points themselves and if the truck runs then it is usually ok.
If it is doing it with the engine off then it is the radio itself...
